We are seeking a dynamic and energetic General Manager to lead all operations of our vibrant gourmet market, full-service deli, kitchen, and café. In this pivotal role, you will own the daily rhythm of the store — from produce rotation and vendor purchasing to deli execution and café quality — while building and leading a talented team that delivers an exceptional customer experience every day.
This is a hands-on leadership position for someone who thrives in a fast-paced specialty food environment. You will split your time roughly equally between the retail floor and the deli/kitchen, covering shifts as needed, stepping in for call-outs and vacations, and keeping every corner of the store fresh, exciting, and running at its best. Key Responsibilities
Store Operations & Leadership
- Own all daily store operations including the retail floor, deli, kitchen, and café — ensuring smooth execution across every department
- Cover call-outs, vacations, and scheduling gaps personally, maintaining consistent coverage and operational standards at all times
- Split time approximately 50/50 between the retail floor and deli/kitchen operations on a typical shift *Must have kitchen/restaurant experience.
- Ensure all areas are clean, organized, fully stocked, and customer-ready at all times
- Uphold health, safety, and food handling standards in strict compliance with all local regulations
Purchasing, Merchandising & Inventory
- Manage all purchasing for grocery, produce, deli, and kitchen — sourcing from local, artisan, and small-batch vendors whenever possible
- Keep the store feeling fresh and seasonally relevant through thoughtful buying, creative displays, and smart rotation
- Develop and execute merchandising strategies that drive sales, minimize waste, and create a compelling shopping experience
- Monitor inventory levels, perform regular counts, and maintain tight controls to optimize margins
- Negotiate pricing and build strong relationships with existing and new vendors and suppliers
- Help develop and introduce new menu items and seasonal features in the deli and kitchen
- Implement and oversee promotional pricing and sale item execution
Team Management & Development
- Hire, onboard, schedule, and manage approximately 30 full- and part-time employees across retail and deli/kitchen (10+ on a given shift)
- Lead performance reviews, coaching conversations, and disciplinary actions with consistency and care
- Develop and run training programs covering food safety, product knowledge, customer service, POS systems, and kitchen equipment
- Foster a positive, inclusive team culture where employees feel valued, motivated, and set up to succeed
- Serve as the escalation point for employee concerns and customer issues
Financial & Administrative
- Manage cash handling procedures, reconciliation, and daily reporting
- Monitor sales trends via POS data and take action to optimize store performance
- Maintain awareness of budget targets, labor costs, and margin goals
- Ensure accurate pricing, signage, and labeling across all departments
Qualifications - Required
- Proven experience in retail store management or supervision, with a strong background in restaurant, deli, or specialty food environments
- Hands-on experience working in a deli or kitchen setting, including proficiency with equipment such as espresso machines, slicers, griddles, fryers, char grills, and turbo ovens
- Demonstrated experience managing and developing a team of 15+ employees
- Strong purchasing and merchandising instincts — you know how to buy well and display it beautifully
- Experience with inventory management, POS systems, cash handling, and basic retail math
- Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities without losing your cool
- Flexible schedule availability — this role requires covering shifts across the week including weekends
- Experience managing a specialty grocery, gourmet market, or farm-to-table retail concept
- Established relationships with local or regional food vendors and producers
- Background in menu development and recipe costing
- Familiarity with food labeling regulations and deli/kitchen compliance requirements
Schedule
This is a Wednesday–Sunday position with Monday and Tuesday off. 45-50 Hour per Week.
- Wednesday: 10:00 AM – 6:30 PM
- Thursday: 9:00 AM – 6:30 PM
- Friday: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
- Saturday: 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM or 9:00 AM – 6:30 PM (based on operational needs)
- Sunday: 8:00 AM – 5:30 PM
Flexibility to cover additional shifts, holidays, and call-outs is required given the nature of this role.
