Position Summary
ENGCO (engcous.com) is a Texas engineering and construction firm delivering commercial, industrial, and civil projects — including PEMB and structural steel buildings — with engineering, estimating, and construction under one accountable team. We are seeking a self-sufficient GC Estimator to own our bid pipeline end to end: identifying opportunities, developing relationships, preparing accurate full-scope cost estimates, and submitting winning bids across competitive and negotiated work.
This is a unique opportunity to help build and scale ENGCO's estimating department. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing our estimating standards, subcontractor relationships, pricing databases, and bid strategy while working directly with company leadership.
Typical Project Profile
Commercial projects typically ranging from $500K to $20M: warehouses, retail, office buildings, churches, industrial facilities, PEMB structures, and municipal work, alongside civil and land development scopes.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating & Bidding
- Own the full bid lifecycle — takeoffs, all-trade pricing, subcontractor leveling, proposal assembly, on-time submission, and follow-up.
- Pursue negotiated work, private commercial projects, and design-build opportunities in addition to competitive bids.
- Identify bid opportunities and build ENGCO's presence on bid platforms and GC prequalification portals (BuildingConnected, SmartBid, Dodge, plan rooms, municipal portals).
- Perform quantity takeoffs for concrete, steel, earthwork, utilities, paving, structural, architectural, and MEP scopes.
- Estimate PEMB and structural steel scopes, including material, fabrication, and erection costs.
- Prepare detailed cost estimates, budgets, and bid proposals; develop conceptual estimates during early planning stages.
- Analyze labor, equipment, material, and subcontractor costs; identify project risks and recommend cost-saving alternatives.
- Maintain current pricing databases for labor, equipment, and materials; assist with value engineering and constructability reviews.
- Track win/loss rates and refine bid strategy with leadership.
Business Development & Client Engagement
- Develop and maintain relationships with subcontractors and suppliers; solicit and evaluate their quotations.
- Build relationships with owners, architects, and developers; network to uncover negotiated work.
- Maintain ENGCO's GC prequalification status with key clients.
- Present estimates to leadership and clients; participate in scope review meetings; support interviews and presentations.
- Attend pre-bid meetings and perform site visits; coordinate with engineers, architects, and project managers to clarify requirements.
- Support project teams during contract negotiations and project handoff.
Required Qualifications
- 4+ years of experience estimating full commercial GC bids — all trades, ground-up.
- Hands-on experience pricing PEMB and structural steel packages — material, fabrication, and erection cost drivers. This is core to the role, not a plus.
- Strong understanding of construction methods, materials, and building systems.
- Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing drawings independently.
- Proficiency in Bluebeam, Microsoft Excel, and Word, plus experience with quantity takeoff and estimating software.
- Self-starter who builds a bid pipeline and brings a network — not just responds to invitations.
- Excellent mathematical, analytical, and organizational skills; strong written and verbal communication.
- Ability to manage multiple bids simultaneously and meet strict deadlines.
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field preferred.
Strong Pluses
- Existing relationships with Houston-area subcontractors and suppliers — highly desirable; good estimators bring their network with them.
- Experience with Procore, BuildingConnected, SmartBid, PlanSwift, On-Screen Takeoff (OST), Sage Estimating, or HeavyBid.
- Civil, sitework, utilities, drainage, earthwork, and land development estimating experience.
- AISC familiarity and knowledge of local permit requirements and construction practices.
- Design-build experience and conceptual budgeting from preliminary plans.
Compensation & Benefits
- $85,000–$110,000 base salary, commensurate with experience.
- Quarterly performance bonus based on successful bid awards, estimate accuracy, and contribution to company backlog.
- Paid holidays and vacation.
- Opportunity to shape and grow ENGCO's estimating department, with advancement as the department scales.
