Job Description: Manufacturing Engineer (Equipment Focus)
Position Summary
The Manufacturing Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, deploying, and optimizing manufacturing processes and equipment to achieve quality, cost, and delivery goals. This role focuses on the lifecycle management of complex manufacturing systems—from equipment specification and integration to continuous improvement and troubleshooting—to ensure maximum utilization of critical resources and optimal production throughput.
Key Responsibilities
Equipment Integration & Deployment: Design, procure, and implement new manufacturing equipment. Develop application software, tooling, and fixtures to support complex mechanical and automated process ste
The SMT Manufacturing Equipment Engineer is responsible for the full lifecycle management of advanced SMT production lines. This role bridges strategic equipment procurement with hands-on technical ownership—including line configuration, validation, maintenance, and optimization. The primary objective is to maximize Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) while ensuring the highest standards of product quality for complex electronics assembly.
Key Responsibilities
Line Lifecycle Management: Lead the end-to-end setup, installation, and qualification of complex SMT manufacturing lines. This includes managing Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) for new equipment.
Equipment Expertise: Maintain deep technical proficiency across the entire SMT value stream, including:
Screen Printers: Solder paste application optimization.
Pick and Place Systems: High-speed component placement and nozzle management.
Reflow Ovens: Thermal profiling and heat management.
Inspection Systems: SPI (Solder Print Inspection), AOI (Automated Optical Inspection), and X-Ray.
Performance Optimization: Drive continuous improvement by analyzing OEE data, machine capability studies, and speed losses. Lead hardware and software upgrades to reduce downtime and improve throughput.
Maintenance Strategy: Develop and execute robust preventative and predictive maintenance plans. Manage critical spare parts inventory to ensure minimal line degradation and rapid recovery from technical failures.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with Process Engineering to ensure equipment is statistically capable of meeting strict product quality requirements. Provide DFM (Design for Manufacturability) feedback to designers to streamline assembly
Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent).
Experience: 2–4 years of experience in high-volume
Advanced Troubleshooting: Ability to diagnose complex electromechanical failures using root-cause analysis (RCA) and data-driven methods.
Data Analysis: Proficiency in statistical process control (SPC), capability indices (, ), and interpreting quality metrics.
Regulatory/Industry Standards: Understanding of IPC-A-610 standards and familiarity with medical/aerospace quality requirements (where applicable).
Project Management: Proven ability to manage multi-million dollar equipment deployments and coordinate with global vendors.
Competencies: Lean Six Sigma methodology, 5S, and strong interpersonal skills for lead-level communication with internal stakeholders.
Key Focus Areas for Success in this Role
SMT Line Performance: You will be expected to own the "uptime" of the line. Your success is measured by your ability to keep machines running at peak efficiency despite the challenges of high-mix, high-complexity product boards.
Data-Driven Decisions: Transitioning from "reactionary" maintenance (fixing what is broken) to "predictive" maintenance (using data to anticipate when a machine will need service) is highly valued.
Vendor Relationships: SMT equipment often requires specialized vendor support; your ability to communicate complex technical requirements to these suppliers is critical to avoid project delays.
