Medical Assistant — Spine & Ortho Specialty
We are seeking a skilled Medical Assistant to support physicians in a fast-paced, patient-centered practice. This role focuses on caring for chronic pain and surgical patients. The ideal candidate has strong clinical skills, familiarity with spine anatomy, and a genuine passion for improving patient mobility and quality of life.
Responsibilities
- Room patients, obtain vital signs, and collect detailed medical histories
- Document patient information accurately in the EMR and ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations
- Assist providers during examinations and procedures
- Perform wound care, dressing changes, and suture or staple removal
- Fit patients with durable medical equipment (DME), including back braces, cervical collars, and TENS units, and provide education on proper use
- Prepare and clean treatment rooms and medical instruments
- Manage and process patient orders, including prescriptions, lab work, physical therapy, and diagnostic testing
- Coordinate and submit outgoing referrals
- Perform patient phone triage and return calls promptly
- Scan and maintain accurate medical documentation in the EHR
- Communicate clearly with patients regarding appointments, tests, and procedures
- Assist with general office tasks, including answering phones and responding to patient, pharmacy, and provider inquiries
Skills & Qualifications
- 1 -2 years of experience as a Medical Assistant required
- Spine, neurosurgery, orthopedic, or pain management experience strongly preferred
- Medical scribe experience preferred
- Ability to type quickly and accurately with proper spelling and grammar
- Proficiency with Electronic Health Records (EHR/EMR); eClinicalWorks preferred
- Knowledge of spine anatomy and orthopedic medical terminology
- Understanding of insurance processes, including prior authorizations, denials, and appeals
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, for patient interactions and team collaboration.
- Ability to work efficiently in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
- Excellent time management skills, ability to multi-task and prioritise work
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a healthcare team
