Position Summary
The Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and improving dry-type transformer components and assemblies using SolidWorks. This role works closely with engineering, production, and quality teams to ensure designs meet customer specifications, industry standards, and manufacturing requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies for dry-type transformers using SolidWorks
- Create and maintain detailed 3D models, 2D drawings, BOMs (Bills of Materials), and engineering documentation
- Collaborate with the production and winding teams to ensure designs are manufacturable and meet quality standards
- Support new product development from concept through production release
- Perform design reviews and revisions based on feedback from engineering, production, and customers
- Ensure designs comply with NEMA, IEEE, and UL standards applicable to dry-type transformers
- Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical design issues on the plant floor
- Work with vendors and suppliers to source materials and components
- Maintain and organize the engineering drawing library and revision control process
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to reduce costs and improve product quality
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- Proficiency in SolidWorks (3D modeling, assemblies, drawings, and PDM)
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles and manufacturing processes
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and schematics
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in a manufacturing environment
Preferred
- Experience in transformer manufacturing or electrical equipment design
- Familiarity with dry-type transformer components (cores, coils, enclosures, insulation systems)
- Knowledge of NEMA ST-20, IEEE C57, or UL 506 standards
- Experience with sheet metal design and fabrication
- PDM/PLM system experience
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work on the plant floor and in an office environment
- Occasionally lift up to 25 lbs
- Ability to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods when on the production floor
Compensation
- Competitive salary commensurate with experience
- Full benefits package including health, dental, and vision after 90 days
