Position Overview
Universal Auto & Tire is seeking a dependable, motivated individual who is interested in developing both automotive service and customer service skills.
This is a Level 1, entry-level position designed for someone who wants to begin or continue building a career in the automotive industry. Prior professional experience is helpful but not required. We are willing to train the right applicant.
The selected candidate will assist with basic vehicle maintenance, tire service, shop operations, customer communication, scheduling, paperwork, and point-of-sale responsibilities. The position may develop into a more advanced technician, service advisor, or combined shop-and-counter role based on the employee’s interests, abilities, and performance.
Automotive Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
- Performing oil and filter changes
- Inspecting and replacing engine air filters and cabin air filters
- Inspecting and topping off vehicle fluids
- Assisting with basic fluid exchanges
- Replacing wiper blades and light bulbs
- Testing and replacing batteries
- Rotating tires
- Checking and adjusting tire pressure
- Mounting and balancing tires
- Repairing eligible tire punctures
- Inspecting tread depth and visible tire condition
- Following proper wheel installation and torque procedures
- Performing basic multipoint and safety inspections
- Identifying visible wear, leaks, damage, and safety concerns
- Accurately documenting inspection findings
- Reporting recommended repairs to the service advisor or lead technician
- Assisting experienced technicians as directed
- Moving customer vehicles safely
Customer Service and Administrative Responsibilities
The employee may also be trained to:
- Answer phones and communicate professionally with customers
- Schedule service appointments
- Assist with customer follow-up
- Create and update repair orders
- Learn and use Shop Boss and other point-of-sale systems
- Process credit card and cash transactions
- Assist with invoices, purchase entries, and basic clerical tasks
- Organize and properly file shop paperwork
- Assist with opening and closing procedures
- Help maintain inventory and notify management when supplies are needed
- Clearly explain basic automotive maintenance and repair recommendations
- Support profitable sales while maintaining honest and respectful customer service
Shop and Workplace Responsibilities
All team members are expected to:
- Report to work on time and ready to begin at the scheduled start time
- Communicate attendance concerns to management as soon as reasonably possible
- Maintain a professional appearance and attitude
- Work cooperatively with technicians, service writers, and ownership
- Maintain clean work bays, tools, equipment, storage areas, and customer areas
- Follow company safety procedures
- Use tools and shop equipment properly
- Treat customer vehicles and company property with care
- Complete assigned work accurately and efficiently
- Handle company funds and customer information responsibly
- Avoid inappropriate or offensive discussions with customers
- Remain flexible when customer service needs require completing work near closing time
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Current high school or vocational students may be considered through an approved internship or work-based learning program
- Valid driver’s license required
- Ability to safely operate customer vehicles
- Ability to perform physical automotive work, including lifting tires, parts, tools, and equipment
- Basic written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
- Dependable attendance and professional conduct
- Willingness to learn both automotive and customer service responsibilities
- Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Automotive, vocational, or technical education
- Previous tire, lube, retail, customer service, or mechanical experience
- Familiarity with hand tools
- Interest in earning ASE or other automotive certifications (Student ASE pay incentive available)
- Ability to explain automotive services in a clear and understandable manner
ASE certification is not required for this entry-level position. Training and certification reimbursement opportunities may be available through qualifying company or affiliate programs.
