Job Purpose:
The Montessori Teacher is a guide who helps direct their students’ activities academically, emotionally, and physically in a prepared Montessori environment that challenges each child to reach their full potential in these developmental areas, in accordance with Montessori Philosophy and procedures in a public school setting.
Qualifications:
Holds a Kansas Teaching Certificate/License or is enrolled in an approved program to obtain Kansas Teaching Certificate/License
Holds Montessori Licensure or is enrolled in an approved program to obtain Montessori Licensure.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
Reports To:
Principal or administrator designee
Performance and Responsibilities:
- Develops lesson plans and manages the learning experiences for students to ensure the needs of the groups and individual students are met.
- Assists students toward self-directed learning and normalization.
- Maintains a neat, well-organized, and attractive prepared environment consistent with Montessori pedagogy.
- Work collaboratively with the Montessori Assistant around daily routines including snack preparation. Provide Montessori lessons to students.
- Collect data to track student performance.
- Counsels pupils when adjustment and academic problems arise.
- Discuss pupils’ academic and behavioral attitudes and achievements with parents.
- Participate on program planning committees, and parent involvement activities.
- Instruct children in practice of personal cleanliness and self-care.
- Engage children in alternate periods of strenuous activity with periods of rest and light activity to avoid overstimulation and fatigue of students.
- Plan individual and group activities to stimulate growth in language, social, and motor skills such as learning to listen to instructions, playing with others and using play equipment.
- Help children develop habits of caring for their materials as well as classroom materials.
- Attend various meetings including, but not limited to: parent conferences, orientation, Professional Development sessions, and in service training sessions.
Critical Skills:
- Possess and maintain licensure (certification) in the state of Kansas
- Ability to speak clearly and audibly to various groups expressing ideas in a logical and forthright manner
- Possess composition skills suitable for producing written communication for a variety of readers
- Ability to quickly analyze a situation and provide prompt advice
- Ability to respond to information requests in a courteous, timely and helpful manner
- Ability to perform job responsibilities using appropriate software on district computer system and communication equipment
- Ability to manage job responsibilities while meeting established deadlines
- Ability to work constructively and cooperatively with others
Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
