Pay Range: $400 - $450K

Responsibilities:
Essential Functions

Collaborate with ED nursing leadership, emergency medicine physicians and APPs, and hospital administration to ensure the ED care delivery model achieves high-quality emergency care and evolves to match the needs of patients, the department, the hospital, and the community.

Foster an environment of accountability and high performance across both sites.

Ensure providers are compliant with departmental, hospital, and medical staff policies.

Direct recruitment, hiring, and credentialing, orientation, and training of emergency medicine providers.

Coordinate fair/ equitable scheduling of emergency medicine physicians and APPs, ensuring appropriate coverage and continuity across Heywood Hospital and Athol Memorial Hospital.

Evaluate ED staffing and coverage models to optimize care and financial considerations.

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of APP supervision agreements, development, and retention.

Develop, update, and implement departmental policies, procedures, and protocols for the emergency departments.

Chair emergency medicine provider meetings and represent emergency medicine at hospital and system-level committees.

Lead quality assurance and performance improvement activities within the department, against defined and regularly reported metrics.

Monitor patient experience and patient flow; design and implement process improvement strategies to optimize these areas, including reducing boarding and length of stay.

Drive quality of care through quality assurance improvement initiatives within the department.

Participate in risk management activities on relevant departmental issues. Work with ED staff to mitigate areas of high risk.

Investigate and respond to patient complaints or grievances related to patient care (physicians or APPs), in collaboration with the Quality and Risk Department.

Prepare for and participate in accreditation or certification surveys in collaboration with the Quality and Risk Department.

Develop departmental operating and capital budgets.

Monitor key financial and operational metrics (e.g., provider productivity, length of stay, and departures before care completion) and lead initiatives to improve performance.

Partner with revenue cycle and coding teams to monitor and optimize ED documentation, coding accuracy, and billing compliance.

Available to troubleshoot issues and/or concerns in the Emergency Department when they arise, escalating concerns as appropriate.
Functional Demands
Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Frequently reaches (extending hands and arms in any direction), and handles (seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or working with hands).

Qualifications:
Job Requirements
Minimum Education

M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited medical school. Board-certified in Emergency Medicine.
Minimum Licenses
-
Current State of Massachusetts Medical License.
Minimum Work Experience
-
Minimum 5 years’ experience as an emergency physician. Additional degree (e.g., MBA, MHA); experience as an ED Medical Director or Assistant Medical Director will be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.

Experience with innovative care delivery models (e.g., Mobile Integrated Health) preferred.
Required Skills
Demonstrated experience with physician leadership, including quality improvement, team development, finance, and budgeting.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to build trust and respect of patients, staff, and colleagues while building and supporting teams.
Excellent clinical and administrative problem-solving skills.
