Position Summary
The Borough of Franklin Park is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time Public Works Mechanic to inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair the Borough's fleet of vehicles, heavy equipment, small engines, and related equipment. This position is responsible for ensuring that all Public Works equipment remains safe, reliable, and operational while supporting the Department's mission of providing high-quality municipal services. The Mechanic also assists with general Public Works operations and emergency response activities as needed. The position is based on the duties outlined in the current collective bargaining agreement.
General Description
Must possess mechanical abilities to perform diagnostic and mechanical operations and performing general maintenance functions. Maintain a valid Pennsylvania state inspection license for Class 7 inspections, implement preventive maintenance program. Possess basic skill in welding and fabrication. Possess a willingness to work with others to achieve the Borough’s goals for providing public works services to residents of the Broough. Perform general labor functions as required. Perform any assigned task that is necessary for completing public works functions.
Essential Functions
- Perform preventive maintenance on Borough vehicles, heavy equipment, trailers, and small engine equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and engine-related issues using appropriate diagnostic tools.
- Repair and replace components including brakes, steering, suspension, drivetrains, electrical systems, hydraulics, tires, and engines.
- Conduct Pennsylvania State Inspection and emissions inspections (or obtain certification within one year of hire).
- Maintain accurate maintenance, repair, and inspection records for the Borough fleet.
- Perform routine servicing including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacement, fluid checks, and safety inspections.
- Operate hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, diagnostic equipment, lifts, and other shop equipment safely.
- Assist with equipment preparation and repairs for snow and ice control operations and other seasonal Public Works activities.
- Support general Public Works operations when necessary, including roadway maintenance, stormwater work, and emergency response.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe maintenance shop in accordance with OSHA and Borough safety standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned to ensure effective Public Works operations.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), or the ability to obtain one within one year of hire.
- Pennsylvania State Inspection License appropriate for Borough equipment (Class 7), or the ability to obtain certification within one year of hire.
- Experience maintaining and repairing diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Ability to safely perform welding, fabrication, and mechanical repair work.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 70 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- Three (3) or more years of experience as a fleet or heavy equipment mechanic.
- Experience working in a municipal, public works, construction, or commercial fleet environment.
- Experience with hydraulic systems, heavy trucks, snow removal equipment, and construction equipment.
- Pennsylvania CDL Class A.
