Responsibilities
- Safely operate school buses, transit buses, and paratransit vehicles in accordance with all traffic laws and transportation safety regulations
- Transport students, staff, and community members efficiently while ensuring passenger safety at all times
- Assist passengers with wheelchair boarding, disembarking, and provide wheelchair assistance as needed
- Follow emergency response procedures for transportation incidents, including emergency stop procedures and vehicle codes
- Maintain communication with dispatchers and traffic control to respond quickly to traffic changes or unexpected situations
- Enforce student discipline policies and promote positive behavior management during trips
- Conduct pre-trip inspections, vehicle checks, and routine maintenance reports to ensure vehicle safety and compliance
Qualifications
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements for school bus operation
- Proven experience in bus driving, including school bus driving, transit bus operation or paratransit services
- Knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, transportation safety regulations, and state/local commercial driving laws
- Strong communication skills in English; multilingual abilities are a plus for diverse communities
- Experience working with children or senior care is highly desirable
- Ability to perform heavy lifting when necessary for passenger assistance or vehicle maintenance tasks
- Excellent behavior management skills to handle student discipline effectively and professionally
