TITLE: Custodian III/Handyman
REPORTS TO: Principal
JOB GOAL: Under the immediate supervision of the principal, is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning and minor maintenance tasks in a school building; perform related duties as required. To provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient place in which to learn, play and develop.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in janitorial work.
- Knowledge of swimming pool maintenance.
- Able to operate HVAC, Fire alarm and Water Systems.
- Ability to repair and clean carpet and tile.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform self-assessments of job completion and complete the necessary forms to verify.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Willing to work a flexible schedule.
- Have an outstanding attendance record with minimized absences.
- Must have High School Diploma or GED.
- This job is classified as requiring a medium-heavy work capacity.
- Pass the approved West Virginia Service Personnel Tests for Custodian.
- Any combination of training and experience which would lead to successful employment as a Custodian III.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS FOR THE JOB:
- Sweep, scrub, wax and oil floors in classrooms and hallways and clean soiled carpet.
- Wash blackboards and change erasers.
- Wash walls and windows, fixtures in restrooms, drinking fountains and wash basins.
- Remove damaged areas of carpet and replace damaged torn areas only.
- Cut out and replace old carpet with new patches.
- Take down flag each day; dust-mop stairs and hallways; dust and wax furniture, radiators and window sills.
- Empty trash receptacles; replace hand towels in restrooms, burned out bulbs and tubes; replenish classroom supplies.
- Operate floor buffer and wet pickup machine.
- Should have knowledge or be able and willing to learn HVAC System, Fire Alarm System and Water System.
- Lock buildings and rooms as instructed.
- Load and unload trucks as assigned.
- Move and rearrange furniture as directed; polish furniture and hardware.
- Shovel snow and cut grass as assigned.
- Replace broken glass and perform other minor maintenance work.
- Sweep sidewalks and pick up litter on school grounds.
- Maintain proper room temperatures at all times.
- Inspect building before leaving to make certain all is under control and carry out building checks on the weekends.
- Promote the safety, health and comfort of the students and employees.
- Participate in in-service training as directed.
- Maintain positive work habits.
- Perform duties efficiently and productively.
- Maintain and/or upgrade skills.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Principal.
Currently classified custodians do not have to take the tests.

TITLE: Groundsman
REPORTS TO: Director of Operations
JOB GOAL: Perform duties related to the appearance, repair and general care of school grounds.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possess a high school diploma or GED.
- Possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
- Have knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools and materials used in the landscaping trade.
- Have skill in landscaping.
- Be able to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Have ability to develop and maintain effective writing skills to be able to complete assigned written reports.
- Wiling to work a flexible schedule.
- Willing to participate in the required asbestos training and removal process.
- Any combination of training and experience which would lead to successful employment as a Groundsman.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
- Accept general maintenance assignments from the Supervisor of Maintenance.
- Participate in in-service training as directed.
- Maintain positive work habits.
- Perform duties efficiently and productively.
- Maintain and/or upgrade skills.
- Cut lawns, using hand or power mower.
- Trim and edge around walks, flower beds, and walls using clippers, weed cutters, and edging tools.
- Prune shrubs and trees to shape and improve growth or remove damaged leaves, branches, or twigs using shears, pruners, or chain saw.
- Rake and/or bag leaves.
- Clean grounds and removes litter.
- Shovel and/or plow snow from walks and driveways.
- Spread salt on public passageways to prevent ice buildup.
- Plant grass, flowers, trees, and shrubs using gardening tools.
- Maintain lawn, flowers, trees, and shrubs by watering, mulching, and/or fertilizing.
- Repair fences and outbuildings.
- Clean out drainage ditches and/or culverts.
- Perform ground maintenance duties using a tractor equipped with attachments, such as mowers, spreaders, lawn roller, snow removal equipment, etc.
- Sharpen tools, such as weed cutters edging tools, and shears, using a file or knife sharpener.
- Make minor equipment repair using hand and power tools.
- Communicate freely within the chain of command.
- Promote exchange of ideas with fellow workers.
- Keep work area(s) neat and engage in good safety practice.
- Coordinate work with other school personnel, as necessary.
- Care for tools and equipment properly and report needed repairs or preventative maintenance items to the supervisor.
- Inform the supervisor of needed tools, equipment, and supplies for completion of work tasks.
- Adhere to established laws, policies, rules, and regulations.
- Perform job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Specific vision abilities required including close, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- This position may work around hazardous materials such as gasoline, diesel, etc.
- Noise levels in the work environment are moderate to loud due to the use of the power tools and other mechanical equipment such as tractors, weed-eaters, etc.
- Physical Requirements:
o Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas.
o Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and push and/or pull 50 pound loads at a time.
o Must be able to work in all weather conditions.
o Must be able to stand and walk up to eight hours per day.
o May occasionally be required to bend or twist at the neck and/or trunk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.
