Overview
The Secondary English-Language Arts Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, standards-aligned literacy instruction in a 100% virtual environment. Holding a valid Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BOEE) license with a 5-12 English/Language Arts endorsement, this educator will translate traditional ELA concepts, critical reading, persuasive writing, media literacy, and verbal communication, into highly engaging digital formats. The teacher will manage online curriculum implementation, facilitate both synchronous virtual lessons and asynchronous coursework, and proactively monitor student data to provide highly individualized interventions.
Essential Duties
- Instruction and Curriculum Delivery
- Deliver core secondary English Language Arts instruction in a fully online environment utilizing both synchronous live virtual sessions and asynchronous self paced digital modules teaching methods
- Adapt and augment standardized online ELA curriculum to ensure alignment with the Iowa Core Standards for literacy writing and speaking
- Design and implement engaging multimodal digital lessons using the designated Learning Management System LMS and multimedia tools such as instructional videos and interactive presentations
- Grade a high volume of student writing providing constructive detailed and timely digital feedback to foster student growth in composition and critical analysis
- Student Monitoring and Support
- Regularly analyze LMS data such as login frequency assignment completion rates and assessment scores to monitor student progress and pacing
- Implement a proactive data driven intervention strategy for students failing to meet academic expectations or showing signs of disengagement
- Host consistent virtual office hours and provide one on one or small group remediation sessions via video conferencing to support diverse learning needs
- Administer and proctor required state standardized tests and internal benchmark assessments in a secure online or designated in person testing environment
- Communication and Professionalism
- Establish and maintain consistent clear and positive communication with students parents and designated learning coaches via email LMS messaging and phone calls
- Maintain accurate and up to date digital records of student attendance grades communication logs and intervention efforts in compliance with state regulations and school policy
- Participate actively in regular virtual staff meetings professional learning communities PLCs and required professional development sessions to continuously improve online pedagogy
Knowledge, Skills & Attributes
- Minimum of two (2) years of successful teaching experience, preferably in a secondary setting.
- Proven experience working independently with minimal supervision, including the ability to manage a digital task list and maintain a stable remote (home-office) infrastructure.
- Minimum of 1–2 years of experience using the Google Workspace suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive) in a professional or academic setting.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex ideas via written channels (Email, Google Chat, and Document Comments) with high clarity and low ambiguity.
- Access to a private, secure, high-speed internet connection with a minimum of 25 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload speeds.
- Deep working knowledge of the Iowa Core Standards for secondary English Language Arts with the ability to translate complex literacy writing and analytical standards into asynchronous digital modules
- Understanding of Universal Design for Learning UDL principles and online instructional best practices to ensure materials are accessible differentiated and engaging for diverse remote learners
- Knowledge of FERPA state data privacy regulations and the ethical use of educational technology in student work
- Advanced ability to navigate build within and troubleshoot modern Learning Management Systems such as Canvas Blackboard and live virtual classroom platforms
- Skill in continuously monitoring LMS engagement analytics log in durations and formative assessments to identify struggling students and initiate targeted timely interventions
- The ability to provide clear actionable and encouraging feedback on student writing in a text heavy online environment without the benefit of real time tone of voice
- Capability to design interactive multimodal content such as narrated videos interactive slides and robust discussion boards that moves beyond simply uploading static documents
- Prior experience teaching tutoring or actively participating as a learner in a fully online or blended educational environment is highly desirable
- Residency in the state of Iowa is required.

Education & Certification Requirements
- A bachelor's degree in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a related field.
- A bachelor's degree in English, English Education, Literature, or a related field.
Must hold a valid active Iowa Board of Educational Examiners BOEE teaching license with a grades 5 through 12 English Language Arts endorsement such as Endorsement 120 or 1201.
