Directional Drill Operator – Utility Construction
Position Title: Directional Drill Operator
Department: Construction / Utilities
Reports To: Construction Manager / Foreman
Position Summary
The Directional Drill Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining directional drilling equipment used in the installation of underground utility infrastructure, including fiber optic, telecommunications, electric, gas, and water systems. The operator works closely with locators, laborers, and supervisors to complete projects safely, efficiently, and according to project specifications.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate horizontal directional drilling equipment for underground utility installation.
- Read and interpret construction prints, utility maps, and bore plans.
- Perform pre-trip and daily inspections on drilling equipment and support vehicles.
- Safely drill and install conduit, innerduct, and utility lines.
- Coordinate with utility locators and crew members during drilling operations.
- Maintain proper bore depth and alignment while avoiding existing utilities.
- Conduct potholing and verify utility locations before drilling.
- Ensure all work complies with company safety standards and OSHA regulations.
- Complete daily production reports, equipment logs, and job documentation.
- Perform basic maintenance and minor repairs on drilling equipment.
- Load and unload equipment, materials, and tools as needed.
- Assist with restoration and cleanup of job sites.
- Travel to various job locations as required.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of directional drilling experience preferred.
- Experience in utility construction, fiber optic installation, or underground construction preferred.
- Ability to read utility prints and locate markings.
- Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred.
- Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and underground utility practices.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment safely and efficiently.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb for extended periods.
- Ability to work overtime and occasional weekends when required.
Work Environment
- Outdoor construction environment.
- Exposure to dirt, mud, dust, noise, and changing weather conditions.
- Work is performed near active roadways and underground utilities.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with Vermeer or Ditch Witch drill systems.
- Knowledge of fiber optic utility installation.
- CDL Class A license.
- Experience with mud mixing systems and drilling fluid management.
