Job Position: Flat Bed CDL-A Driving
Location: Tacoma, WA 98421
Pay Rate: $30.00/hr
Shift: Varies start time 5am-7am depending on route
Description:
A CDL Flatbed Truck Driver operates commercial motor vehicles equipped with open-platform trailers to transport large, heavy, or irregularly shaped freight. Unlike standard dry van positions, this role is highly physically demanding and requires manual load securement, making it an excellent career path for self-starters who enjoy a physical challenge and specialized work.
The flatbed driver is responsible for safely driving a tractor-trailer across local routes while taking complete ownership of the cargo. Because flatbed trailers have no walls or ceilings, the driver must physically secure commodities which varies. —such as lumber, steel coils, machinery, and piping—to ensure they do not shift or fall during transit.
Cargo Securement: Apply chains, steel straps, winches, and binders to lock down oddly shaped or heavy freight according to Department of Transportation (DOT) safety standards.
Tarping: Manually lift and roll heavy industrial tarps (often weighing 80 to 90 pounds) over freight to protect it from harsh weather elements like rain, wind, and snow.
En-Route Inspections: Regularly pull over during transit to visually check and physically tighten straps or chains that may have loosened due to road vibrations.
Pre- and Post-Trip Inspections: Execute thorough daily safety inspections of the truck and trailer, including brakes, tires, lights, and coupling mechanisms.
Safe Vehicle Operation: Navigate large commercial vehicles through intense traffic, tight jobsites, and varying terrain while heavily loaded.
Logbook and Compliance: Maintain precise digital or paper logs of driving hours, rest periods, and delivery bills to ensure compliance.
Site Coordination: Collaborate actively with crane operators, forklift drivers, and shipping personnel at drop-off zones to safely position the truck for loading and unloading.
Skills and Qualifications
License: A valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL-A) is mandatory.
Physical Fitness: High stamina and upper body strength are required; drivers must routinely lift heavy tarps, climb onto trailers, and handle heavy chains.
Weather Resilience: Willingness to work outside in extreme temperatures, heat, heavy rain, or freezing sleet to secure or unsecure loads.
Detail Orientation: Knowledge of weight distribution math to prevent trailer tipping or axle overloads.
