We are seeking a skilled and motivated Sr. Electrical (Power) Engineer to join a clients’ refinery operations team in the Martinez, CA area. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for assuring the safe, cost-effective reliability and integrity of electrical systems across the facility. You will collaborate closely with Electrical Inspectors on both long-term reliability objectives and day-to-day troubleshooting of complex refinery electrical equipment — including 15kV, 4160V, 2300V, and 480V distribution systems, synchronous and induction motors, starters, fans and blowers — while also providing critical technical support to an on-site 98.5MW cogeneration unit.
What You’ll Do:
- Champion a Goal Zero safety culture by ensuring compliance with site electrical safety standards, process safety fundamentals, and applicable regulations including NFPA 70E, OSHA Subpart S, and OSHA 1910.269.
- Educate and mentor team members on electrical safety, power generation, power distribution, and equipment best practices.
- Apply electrical engineering expertise across a broad range of technical activities, including:
- Design, repair, and maintenance of electrical distribution equipment (breakers, relay upgrades) and utilization equipment (motors, starters, VFDs, etc.).
- Review and development of switching instructions, electrical procedures, and preventative maintenance plans.
- Management of change (MOC) review and documentation.
- Root cause analysis and risk analysis to eliminate repeat failures.
- Evaluate electrical reliability risks and develop infrastructure upgrade plans, capital projects, and turnaround work packages, including scope development, cost-benefit analysis, equipment procurement, and field execution.
- Collaborate with craft personnel and business teams to support electrical system troubleshooting, field commissioning, and performance monitoring to ensure operability, environmental compliance, and process safety.
- Support turnaround events by developing work scope, drafting execution plans, and providing hands-on technical support during planned outages.
- Ensure all assigned projects comply with applicable industry codes and standards throughout all project phases, including NEC, IEEE, ANSI, NFPA, API, and NEMA.
Provide daily run-and-maintain technical and field support across refinery production plants, utility plants, the electrical distribution network, and the cogeneration facility.

- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
- 5 or more years of experience in refinery, petrochemical, power generation, or equivalent industrial electrical design, repair, and maintenance.
- Familiarity with electrical system modeling and performance analysis.
- Working knowledge of national codes and standards including IEEE, API, NEMA, NFPA, and NEC.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience troubleshooting, analyzing, and resolving complex electrical problems in an industrial setting.
- Experience with the design, specification, and procurement of electrical equipment and systems, including switchgear, motors, heat tracing, UPS, batteries, cathodic protection, motor-operated valves, transformers, breakers, relays, and temporary generators.
- Familiarity with NFPA 70B (Recommended Practice for Electrical Equipment Maintenance) and hands-on experience executing substation maintenance outages.
- Experience with power system modeling studies, including load flow, short circuit, protective device coordination, transient motor starting, and arc flash analysis.
- Experience with hazardous area classification per API RP-500.
- Proficiency with SKM modeling software, one-line drawings, Schweitzer relay programming, and electrical area classification is a plus. Project lifecycle management experience is also valued.
