Job Summary:
The Courier is responsible for the safe, secure, and timely transport of methadone medication from the clinic to designated New Mexico correctional facilities. This position plays a critical role in supporting continuity of care for incarcerated individuals receiving medication-assisted treatment (MAT). The Driver ensures all transport activities meet DEA regulations, federal and state OTP requirements, and NMTS safety and security standards at all times.
Essential Functions:
- Transport methadone from the clinic to approved prisons and correctional facilities following all regulatory requirements.
- Adhere to strict chain-of-custody procedures, including completion of required transport logs, signatures, and documentation.
- Maintain the security of all medication in transit, ensuring the vehicle remains locked and never left unattended.
- Follow standardized routes and schedules to ensure timely delivery.
- Maintain professional and cooperative communication with correctional facility staff.
- Ensure methadone is only handed off to authorized receiving personnel.
- Immediately report any delays, incidents, vehicle issues, or security concerns to leadership.
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with 42 CFR Part 2 and HIPAA.
- Follow all NMTS policy and procedure related to transportation, medication security, and safety.
- Participate in required trainings (DEA security standards, diversion prevention, chain of custody, driving safety, etc.).
- Exposure to correctional facility environments requiring passing through security checkpoints.
- Strict adherence to confidentiality and safety protocols.
- Other responsibilities and tasks as assigned.
Essential Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid New Mexico driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Must be insurable under company auto insurance requirements.
- Must be age 25 or older
- Must have reliable transportation and service vehicle per manufacturer recommendations
- Must abide by all traffic laws.
- Must pass all screenings required for work in an OTP:
- Pre-employment background check
- Drug and alcohol screening
- Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) clearance
- Must meet DEA security and transport requirements, including:
- No disqualifying criminal history per DEA rules
- Ability to maintain strict medication security
- Completion of required DEA-related training
- Must pass security clearance requirements for NM correctional facilities.
- Strong reliability, punctuality, and ability to follow structured procedures.
- Ability to maintain professionalism when interacting with correctional environments.
- Previous experience in healthcare transport, law enforcement, corrections, or medical delivery.
- Familiarity with OTP operations, methadone chain-of-custody, or secure medication handling.
Physical:
- Frequently sitting at desk or computer while typing, completing paperwork, or meeting patients.
- Occasional lifting/carrying, paperwork, files, office supplies, up to 50 lbs.
- Occasional push/pull exerting up to 25 lbs. force, opening doors, file drawers, pushing files in drawers
- Occasional kneeling/crouching and ability to reach lower file drawers, stretching to store or retrieving materials.
- Ability to sit and drive for extended periods.
Mental:
Position requires constant mental alertness, attention to detail, and high degree of accuracy required. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions and follow-through on all assignments. Must be able to work independently and be able to use sound judgment in critical clinical decisions.
