Job Overview
We are seeking a detail-oriented Special Inspector – Structural Welding / Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) to perform field inspections on active construction projects in the Phoenix metro area. This role is responsible for verifying that welding work complies with approved drawings, project specifications, applicable codes, and approved welding procedures.
This is a field-based role responsible for performing structural welding inspections, reviewing approved project documents, documenting field observations, identifying nonconforming work, and preparing clear inspection reports. The inspector must be able to work independently in the field while coordinating professionally with contractors, QA/QC personnel, engineers, and project representatives.
Duties
- Perform visual inspection of structural welding work in the field.
- Verify welding work for compliance with approved drawings, project specifications, applicable AWS standards, and approved welding procedures.
- Review structural drawings, welding symbols, WPS documents, welder qualifications, and related project documents as required.
- Document inspection results with accurate reports, photos, notes, and deficiency descriptions.
- Identify nonconforming work and communicate findings clearly to contractors, QA/QC personnel, engineers, and project managers.
- Perform follow-up inspections after corrections are completed.
- Maintain accurate daily inspection records and submit reports in a timely manner.
- Follow site safety requirements and maintain professional communication on active construction sites.
- Travel to assigned project sites throughout the Phoenix metro area, including North Phoenix, Mesa, and other project locations (as needed).
Minimum Qualifications
- Current AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification required.
- Minimum 5 years of relevant welding inspection, structural steel inspection, or construction inspection experience required.
- Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, welding symbols, specifications, WPS documents, and related construction documents.
- Knowledge of AWS D1.1 and applicable structural welding inspection requirements.
- Strong written communication skills for inspection reports, field notes, and deficiency documentation.
- Ability to work independently in the field and coordinate with contractors, QA/QC teams, engineers, and project representatives.
- Reliable transportation and ability to travel to assigned project sites throughout the Phoenix metro area.
Preferred Qualifications
- 10+ years of relevant inspection experience.
- ICC Structural Steel and Bolting certification.
- Experience with high-strength bolting, structural steel erection, pipe supports, embeds, miscellaneous metals, or related structural scopes.
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30.
- Experience on large-scale industrial, manufacturing, or similar construction projects.
Pay: $35.00 - $85.00 per hour
