Job Overview
The Roasting Manager will be responsible for coffee quality, roasting schedule, green coffee sourcing, equipment, inventory and other administrative needs of the roasting department at Rare Bird Coffee Roasters.
The ideal candidate will provide strong leadership to the staff to support their good performance and will collaborate closely with our Head Roaster, Head Baker, Café Manager and owners on a consistent basis.
Responsibilities
- Lead a small team to produce high-quality coffees.
- Manage scheduling and hiring for the roasting team’s
- Provide coffee training for roasting team, baristas and clients.
- Selection and purchasing of green coffee
- Communicate with importers about new coffee releases and upcoming coffees
- Order and roast samples of new coffees
- Contract and schedule the release of green coffee with warehouse
- Manage green coffee inventory, using Cropster and other softwares
- Calculate and manage final coffee product pricing
- Coordinate cupping sessions in close collaboration with the Head Roaster, Director of Business Development and owners.
- Quality control
- Manage scheduling, hiring, and training of coffee roasting and fulfillment positions
- Conduct routine internal quality control and cupping sessions with baristas and café managers
- Maintaining a clean and orderly work environment
- Coordinate cleaning and maintenance schedule for roastery and café coffee related equipment
- Perform assigned scheduled cleaning and maintenance of equipment
- Oversee the general organization of the roasting area to support workflow and efficiency
- Managing Wholesale and client accounts
- Serve as a strong point of contact for wholesale clients and subscribers
- Working in collaboration with other departments (baking) to fulfill wholesale orders
- Deliver to local wholesale clients
- Preparing and adjusting invoices, payments and charges.
- Communicate with bookkeeper regarding financial concerns as necessary
- Help fulfill online coffee orders
- Staff management
- Proactively communicate observations and actions to support continuous improvement for staff.
- Manage scheduling, hiring, and training of coffee roasting and fulfillment positions
- Occasional roasting shifts may be required in the event the head roaster is unavailable
Qualifications
- Demonstrated passion and enthusiasm for specialty coffee (required)
- At least 3 years of roasting experience on a commercial roaster (preferred)
- At least 3 years of people, product and/or process management (required)
- Highly motivated individual with a positive attitude, and problem solving capabilities
- Good work organization, attention to detail, and the ability to focus on, and complete tasks
- Excellent time management and flexibility to prioritize scheduled tasks for both self and others
- Professional written and verbal communication skills
- Familiarity with roasting softwares like Cropster and other computer tools such as spreadsheets (preferred)
- Ability to stand for long periods and move heavy objects with the use of equipment such as lifts and dollies
- Knowledge of SCA cupping standards and protocols
- Able to setup and perform coffee cuppings for tasting and evaluation
- Ability to taste, smell and detect basic aromas and flavors in roasted coffee
- Basic technical aptitude and willingness to learn equipment details and protocols
- Being comfortable with high levels of noise (Ear protection is provided)
- Being comfortable around heavy-duty machinery
Compensation & Benefits
This is a full-time (32-40 hours per week), hourly position that will be five days per week and while each work week will consist of two consecutive days off, necessary workdays may fall on a weekend
- $26-28 per hour, based on experience (the starting hourly rate will increase after a 90-day probationary period)

Pay: $26.00 - $28.00 per hour
