The Role and Why It's Important
As a Warehouse Generalist I at Hy-Vee, you play a key role in making sure the right products reach the right place at the right time. Each shift, you'll help receive incoming deliveries, prepare outgoing shipments, and properly organize and move food products throughout the warehouse, building foundational forklift and warehouse skills along the way. What You'll Do
- Show up for work on time and ready to work every shift
- Operate power industrial trucks, including pallet jacks and a stand-up forklift, once certified
- Keep supervisors informed of changes with inbound and outbound loads
- Load and unload trailers as part of daily warehouse operations
- Ensure all outbound orders are properly loaded and scanned into the system, and that all inbound orders are received accurately
- Follow all Good Manufacturing Practices and safety processes and procedures
- Ensure food quality through proper rotation and handling of product
- Build basic knowledge across warehouse functions and demonstrate proficiency in at least one: scanning and labeling finished goods and recording production numbers; wrapping, scanning, and loading outbound pallets by tracking number; using a forklift to move product to production or into warehouse storage; checking inbound shipment temperatures; counting and receiving inbound product and recording weight or quantity discrepancies; or safely unloading trucks with a forklift or pallet jack
- Complete the provided forklift certification program
- Assist with inventory, production needs, and packaging as needed
- Maintain and clean work and warehouse areas, including sweeping and general housekeeping
- Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned by your supervisor or manager

Education and Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent experience
- Basic computer knowledge necessary
- Zero to one year of similar or related work experience
Physical Requirements
- Ability to regularly lift and carry items up to 65 pounds (e.g., cases of product weighing 60-65 lbs.)
- Ability to perform repetitive physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and grasping throughout your shift
- Ability to perform tasks such as stooping, kneeling, crawling, reaching, climbing, balancing, bending, standing, and walking
- Ability to see items at various distances, with or without corrective lenses, to safely operate equipment and identify products
- Ability to hear adequately to communicate with co-workers and respond to safety warnings
- Ability to work in a warehouse environment, including cooler and freezer areas, which may require standing, walking, and navigating warehouse conditions
- Must pass the provided forklift certification program
Working Environment
This position works across an office, produce warehouse, and freezer environment. Dock and cooler areas range from 34°F to 40°F, and the freezer operates at -10°F. The role is fast-paced and requires the ability to multitask and maintain focus on safety and accuracy, with regular contact with incoming drivers and PDI personnel. You'll use equipment including manual, battery-powered, single, and double pallet jacks, a stand-up reach forklift and sit-down forklift, the ProcessPro Inventory Control System, mainframe terminals, PC and spreadsheet software, CB radio and warehouse intercom, and standard office equipment such as telephone, 10-key calculator, copier, and fax.
