Why does the job exist?
The Deputy Director of Communications will serve as a key member of the New Mexico Environment Department's Office of Communications, supporting the Director of Communications, executive leadership and the Office of the Governor in strategically communicating the Department's goals, accomplishments and responsibilities.
Primary responsibilities include leading strategic media outreach, managing complex marketing and communications campaigns, providing professional and technical guidance to Office of Communications staff, and supporting Department leadership as needed. This role is critical to the Department's external communications efforts and will help advance its administrative, policy, scientific and regulatory goals.
How does it get done?
- Assist in the development and implementation of comprehensive agency communication strategies across digital, social and traditional media platforms
- Manage day-to-day operations of the Office of Communications, including workflow coordination, staff supervision and quality assurance for all outgoing communications
- Serve as a deputy spokesperson for the agency, including responding to media inquiries, coordinating interviews, and preparing talking points, press releases, speeches and official statements for leadership
- Oversee the agency's digital presence, including website content, social media accounts, brand standards and accessibility compliance
- Manage communications-related contracts, vendors, budgets and procurement activities as assigned

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field of study from an accredited college or university and six (6) years of professional level experience with a tactical impact directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling ten (10) years may substitute for the required education and experience
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid driver¿s license. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with frequent deadlines, high visibility, and regular interaction with executive leadership and external stakeholders. Position may require extended hours, travel, and on-call availability for emergency communication needs.
