Job Summary
The Animal and Biosafety Coordinator provides professional level support to the International Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), Infectious Organism Research Review Committee (IORRC) and Radiation Research Safety Commission (RRSC) and technical assistance to large, federally mandated committees. The position oversees the preparation of institutional reports to appropriate federal and state regulating agencies. This role handles the administration and daily management of the office. The Animal and Biosafety Coordinator exercises considerable initiative, independent judgment, and confidentiality in performing the assigned duties, and requires knowledge of a broad range of university and federal regulations, policies, and procedures.
Major Responsibilities/Duties/Critical Tasks
Schedule and Coordinate IACUC, IBC, IORRC and RRSC meetings, prepare agenda and meeting materials to meet distribution deadline.

Conduct intake reviews of protocol submissions and follow up to ensure they are complete.

Monitor existing protocols and send notification of upcoming expiration dates.

Serve as recorder for committee meetings, drafts meeting minutes in a timely manner, prepare and distribute memos delineating committee decisions and any revision requirements.

Review investigator’s responses for completeness.

Distribute revised protocols to reviewers and convey reviewer’s comments and questions to the investigator.

Prepare approval documentation or withdrawals.

Gather information and background material in response to inquiries or issues raised.

Respond to requests for information regarding committee review.

Provide professional support to the IACUC, IORRC, IBC, and RRSC committees including advice, information, materials, and supplies.

Lead special projects identified and assigned by the Animal and Biosafety Program Director.

Manage fiscal activities, including posting and reconciling the Animal and Biosafety Program accounts.

Provide expert level knowledge (application and interpretation) of federal and state regulations and policies, and institutional policies.

Serve as a liaison to national organizations, federal agencies, cooperating institutions, and other universities.

Assist with developing forms and manuals, including committee policies and procedures, and support the orientation and training of new committee members.

Facilitate the revisions and implementation of committee forms, policies, and standard operating procedures.

Organize training workshops for research staff regarding IACUC, IBC, IORRC, and RRSC procedures and requirements.
Coordinate inspections and program reviews.

Schedule and coordinate IACUC semi-annual inspections and program reviews, conduct annual IBC laboratory inspections, and organize general lab inspections.

Work with the IACUC chair, attending veterinarian, and animal resource supervisor for post approval monitoring of IACUC approved activities.

Prepares official reports in accordance with federal and institutional guidelines.

Maintains official and electronic records and files.

Performs all other duties as assigned.
Required Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

Two (2) years’ experience in a related field.

Preferred Education/Experience
Master’s Degree in related field.

Familiarity with scientific terminology preferred.
Accompanying Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies
Proficiency with MS Suite.

Knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local regulations and policies governing the use of animals, recombinant and synthetic DNA, infectious agents, and radioactive materials in research.

Additional Information
The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
