Academy Orthopedics is an orthopedic surgery and sports medicine practice serving patients throughout northern New Jersey. Our billing department operates from our main office in Wayne.
Position Summary
Academy Orthopedics is seeking a Medical Billing Specialist to join our in-house billing team. This position is responsible for accounts receivable follow-up, denial management, and claim resolution for the practice’s primary commercial payers, along with the preparation and transfer of specialty claims to our external billing partner. The practice uses eClinicalWorks (ECW) for practice management and billing.
Prior medical billing experience is preferred but not required; structured training on our systems and payer processes is provided. In lieu of experience, candidates should demonstrate strong attention to detail and an interest in working with numbers, data, and finance. We are looking for a professional who takes ownership of their work, manages responsibilities independently, and is seeking a long-term position with a growing practice.
Location: 504 Valley Road, Suite 201, Wayne, NJ 07470
Work arrangement: On-site, five days per week; this position is not remote or hybrid
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM, with a paid half-hour lunch
Compensation: $23–$26 per hour, commensurate with experience
Responsibilities
- Monitor aged accounts receivable and follow up on unpaid and underpaid claims by phone and through payer portals
- Review EOBs and electronic remittances to identify denial reasons; correct and resubmit claims
- Prepare and submit appeals; track deadlines and payer responses through resolution
- Verify that out-of-network, workers’ compensation, and PIP/no-fault claims are complete and accurately coded before transfer to the practice’s external billing partner
- Support the full revenue cycle as needed, including charge entry, payment posting, eligibility verification, patient statements, and records requests
- Respond to patient and payer billing inquiries and route matters outside the department’s scope appropriately
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Strong attention to detail and a high standard of accuracy
- Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and follow through on open items with minimal supervision
- Sound judgment in identifying and escalating issues promptly
- Professional written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Outlook, and the ability to learn new software
- Dependability and punctuality, with the ability to work on-site five days per week
- Commitment to confidentiality in handling patient information (HIPAA training provided)
Preferred
- Prior medical billing, medical office, or health insurance experience
- Medical billing coursework or progress toward CPC, CPB, or COC certification
- Familiarity with eClinicalWorks (ECW) or comparable practice management software
- New Jersey workers’ compensation or PIP experience
- Multilingual abilities
Compensation and Benefits
- Hourly rate of $23–$26
