This is a first-of-its-kind role at Austco. You'll lead AI adoption across our entire R&D function — embedding practical AI into engineering, software development, and verification and validation workflows. This is not a research role. We need someone who can act, build, and lead.

- AI tooling and integration
- Evaluate, implement, and champion AI-assisted tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, LLM-based assistants) across the engineering team
- Build internal tools and workflows using LLMs to accelerate development, code review, documentation, and testing
- Pilot AI use cases in V&V and QA processes — automated test generation, requirements traceability, and defect analysis
- R&D AI leadership
- Serve as the primary AI subject matter expert within R&D
- Design and deliver internal training programs to lift AI capability across the engineering team
- Partner with the Head of R&D and CTO to define the AI adoption roadmap
- Champion responsible, auditable AI practices and contribute to internal usage guidelines
- Stay across emerging regulatory guidance on AI in medical devices
- Regulated software environment
- Ensure AI-assisted processes comply with IEC 62304 and applicable quality management requirements
- Work with the quality and regulatory team to document AI tool usage within the SDLC for regulatory submissions
- Collaboration and innovation
- Identify cross-disciplinary AI applications with hardware and firmware engineers
- Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement within the R&D team
- Essential REQUIRED
- Strong software engineering background such as, Python essential, plus C++, C#, or JavaScript
- Hands-on experience integrating LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar) into real production workflows — not just prototypes
- Practical experience with AI-assisted developer tooling; able to evaluate and implement new tools rapidly
- Track record of coaching and up-skilling technical peers and able to train other team members
- Strong written and verbal communication, including documentation for both engineering and regulatory audiences
- Highly Desirable
- Familiarity with regulated software environments such as, IEC 62304, IEC 62443, UL 1069, or equivalent
- Experience in medical devices, healthcare technology, or other safety-critical industries
- Exposure to automated testing frameworks, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps practices
- Experience building AI-assisted tools for V&V, requirements management, or software QA
- Relevant tertiary qualification in software engineering, computer science, or related discipline
