Job Title – Program Coordinator (Certified Peer Recovery Coach)
Location(s): Onsite. Petoskey, Michigan – Some travel required.
Reports To: Recovery Center Program Manager or Executive Director
FLSA Status: Hourly, Full-Time
Pay Rate: $18 – $20 DOE
Schedule Requirements: Minimum of one evening shift per week (until 7:30pm). Periodic nights/weekends for special events. Participation in on-call rotation for hospital-based coaching coverage.
Position Overview
The Program Coordinator/Certified Peer Recovery Coach provides non-clinical, peer-based recovery support services to individuals impacted by substance use, host pro-social events, and host multiple pathway recovery meetings. Services are grounded in lived experience, recovery-oriented principles, and multiple pathways to recovery. This role supports daily operations of the Recovery Community Center and implementation of community-based recovery initiatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide individual peer recovery coaching through scheduled appointments and walk-in support.
- Facilitate peer-led recovery support groups, workshops, and educational sessions.
- Host pro-social recovery-oriented events for the recovery community.
- Support operation of the Recovery Community Center, including welcoming participants and maintaining a recovery-supportive environment.
- Assist with implementation of community recovery initiatives, as assigned.
- Support CRA’s future hospital-based coaching initiative efforts, including participation in on-call rotations as needed.
- Work a minimum of one evening shift per week to support evening recovery meetings, hospital coverage, and/or evening Center hours.
- Document services, contacts, and activities accurately in the Recovery Data Project (RDP) or other required data systems.
- Coordinate with community partners to support referrals to recovery-supportive resources.
- Participate in required trainings to maintain peer recovery coach credentials.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of one (1) year of peer recovery coaching experience or closely related direct human-services experience required.
- CCAR Peer Recovery Coach certification required; MDHHS Certified Peer Recovery Coach preferred or ability to complete upon hire.
- This position is funded in part or in full by a grant from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). All candidates must be eligible to complete the MDHHS Certified Peer Recovery Coach training program. The application and requirements can be found here.
- Lived experience of recovery.
- Must have strong knowledge of harm reduction principles and be willing to support individuals utilizing harm reduction practices.
- Prior customer service experience required (e.g., retail, restaurant/food service, or other public-facing hospitality role) demonstrating the ability to engage the public, manage competing demands, and maintain composure in a fast-paced environment.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Valid State of Michigan driver’s license.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge
- Knowledge of multiple recovery pathways, peer recovery principles, harm reduction, and ethical guidelines for peer support.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and strengths-based engagement.
- Knowledge of community resources, referral processes, and recovery capital building.
Skills
- Skill in establishing trusting, nonjudgmental relationships with individuals across stages of change.
- Skill in goal-setting, recovery planning, and facilitating peer-led support activities.
- Skill in accurate documentation, boundary management, and adherence to confidentiality standards.
- Skill in customer-facing communication and support, and maintaining professionalism under pressure, developed through prior customer service work.
Abilities
- Ability to support individuals without providing clinical treatment, diagnosis, or therapy.
- Ability to model recovery-oriented behaviors, hope, and self-advocacy.
- Ability to engage diverse populations and adapt support approaches to individual needs and circumstances.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment with minimal direct oversight, consistent with prior coaching experience.
