A high-volume automotive dealership in the Washington, DC metropolitan area is seeking an experienced General Sales Manager to lead its new and pre-owned vehicle sales operations.This is a confidential opportunity for a proven automotive leader who understands how to grow sales, protect gross profit, develop a high-performing team, and deliver an exceptional customer experience. Position Responsibilities
The General Sales Manager will oversee the day-to-day performance and profitability of the dealership’s new and pre-owned sales departments.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead, coach, and develop sales managers and sales professionals
- Establish monthly and annual objectives for unit volume, gross profit, customer satisfaction, and departmental expenses
- Analyze sales performance and financial data to identify opportunities for improvement
- Manage vehicle inventory levels, aging, pricing, and merchandising
- Implement and maintain a consistent, structured sales process
- Assist managers and sales professionals with deal structuring, desking, negotiations, and closing
- Develop realistic but aggressive individual and departmental performance goals
- Ensure appropriate staffing and scheduling based on business needs
- Monitor market conditions, competitive activity, and local automotive sales trends
- Promote strong customer retention and resolve escalated customer concerns
- Partner with dealership leadership to prepare operating forecasts and departmental budgets
- Maintain accountability while creating a positive, energetic, and professional sales culture
- Ensure dealership policies, manufacturer requirements, and applicable regulations are followed
Qualifications
Qualified candidates should have:
- At least one year of successful experience as an automotive General Sales Manager
- A demonstrated ability to increase new-vehicle sales and overall dealership performance
- Strong automotive retail, desking, structuring, negotiation, and closing skills
- Experience managing both new and pre-owned vehicle operations
- Proven leadership and supervisory experience
- A track record of recruiting, mentoring, developing, and retaining employees
- The ability to establish and execute a structured sales process that supports volume, gross profit, and customer satisfaction
- Strong knowledge of dealership financial statements, forecasting, inventory management, and key performance indicators
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- A professional appearance and strong work ethic
- A positive attitude and high-energy leadership style
- The ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced, results-oriented environment
