Position Summary
The Part-Time HVAC Instructor is responsible for providing introductory heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration instruction to participants enrolled in BNC’s workforce and trades training program. This position will teach basic HVAC concepts, safety practices, tools, equipment, system components, troubleshooting fundamentals, and career pathways.
The HVAC Instructor will help participants gain awareness of the HVAC trade and prepare for entry-level employment, further training, certification opportunities, or apprenticeship pathways. The ideal candidate is an experienced HVAC professional with strong technical knowledge and a passion for teaching and mentoring youth and adult learners.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Deliver part-time HVAC instruction through classroom lessons, demonstrations, and hands-on training activities.
- Teach basic HVAC principles, including heating, cooling, ventilation, refrigeration cycle, airflow, thermostats, ductwork, and system components.
- Introduce participants to common HVAC tools, gauges, meters, equipment, materials, and safety procedures.
- Demonstrate safe and proper use of hand tools, power tools, testing instruments, and HVAC training equipment.
- Teach basic troubleshooting concepts, preventive maintenance, filter replacement, airflow checks, electrical awareness, and system operation.
- Reinforce HVAC safety, PPE use, ladder safety, electrical hazard awareness, refrigerant safety, and proper handling of equipment.
- Introduce participants to EPA Section 608 certification concepts, where applicable.
- Teach basic blueprint, schematic, wiring diagram, and equipment label interpretation at an entry level.
- Explain HVAC career pathways, certifications, apprenticeships, employer expectations, and advancement opportunities.
- Support participants in developing workplace professionalism, communication, teamwork, punctuality, and problem-solving skills.
- Maintain a safe, organized, and respectful learning environment.
- Monitor and document participant attendance, skill development, participation, and progress.
- Provide coaching and feedback to participants regarding technical performance and employment readiness.
- Ensure training equipment, tools, and materials are properly used, maintained, and secured.
- Collaborate with the Project Director / Lead Construction Trainer and BNC staff to support program goals.
- Follow all BNC safety policies, documentation requirements, grant reporting procedures, and participant guidelines.
- Assist with demonstrations, employer engagement, job fairs, or community events as needed.
