The Imaging Technician is responsible for operating and supporting all imaging modalities within Rood & Riddle Wellington’s Imaging Department. This role requires proficiency as a nursing technician within the hospital, participation in the on-call schedule, and direct reporting to and collaboration with the Imaging Lead Technician.
Responsibilities include operating the following imaging modalities:
- Portable X-ray
- Bone scan
- PET scan
- CT (standing and general anesthesia)
- Overhead X-ray
The Imaging Technician is expected to work collaboratively with the imaging team to complete daily imaging procedures efficiently and accurately. This includes managing imaging patients, ensuring proper charting, and completing all billing requirements during each shift.
The technician will communicate effectively with and report to the Imaging Lead Technician regarding workflow, case updates, and any operational concerns.
Once daily imaging responsibilities are completed, the technician is expected to support treatments and assist other areas of the hospital as needed.
Job Responsibilities:
- Functions as a working hospital technician
- Directly responsible for hourly treatments and monitoring, as well as triage and treatment of emergency case load
- Ensures accuracy and completeness of patient records, treatment sheets, and other documentation
- Assists Imaging Lead in the operation of all imaging modalities (bone scan, PET scan, CT, and overhead x-ray)
- Assists Imaging Lead in obtaining diagnostic, quality images meeting the expectations of the radiologists
- Communicates with Imaging Lead as needed
- Sends completed diagnostic images via email to respective doctors/radiologists
- Prepares patients for procedure (physical exam, catheterization, bandaging)
- Practices proper radiation safety measures, record keeping, and ensures safety protocols are followed
- Maintains and cleans imaging rooms, stalls, and imaging building
- Ability to restrain difficult, fractious, sedate horses and resolve problems that may arise
Schedule:
- Full-time, 5 days a week, 8.5-hour shifts
- Participates in on-call schedule, weekend, and holiday rotations
- Overtime as needed

Skills:
- Full understanding of equine anatomy
- Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, unpleasant odors, and radiation
- Extensive horse handling experience
- Ability to work independently and practice good judgement to ensure high quality care for all patients and request assistance when needed
- Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged/challenging situations
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem solving and team advancement.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize workloads, and maintain a clean and organized workspace is essential.
- Ability to adapt to changing situations, troubleshoot problems, and make sound judgments. This is crucial in a fast-paced equine hospital environment.
