Innovate! Inc. is seeking a highly experienced Trainer / Technical Writer to develop clear, practical training and documentation that helps users adopt and sustain geospatial systems and workflows. This role will work closely with technical teams and end users to translate complex GIS concepts, applications, and procedures into understandable training materials, user guides, standard operating procedures, and other operational documentation.

Salary Range: $85,000 – $115,000

Develop and deliver instructor-led, virtual, and hands-on training for GIS applications, workflows, and supporting technologies.

Create user guides, quick-reference materials, standard operating procedures, administrator guides, and technical manuals.

Translate complex GIS, data, application, and system concepts into clear language for technical and nontechnical audiences.

Develop training plans, lesson plans, exercises, demonstrations, and supporting course materials.

Conduct training-needs assessments and tailor content to different user roles, skill levels, and operational responsibilities.

Support training for ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, Survey123, Field Maps, Dashboards, StoryMaps, and related applications.

Develop role-based training for system administrators, GIS analysts, field users, data stewards, and general end users.

Coordinate with GIS architects, developers, analysts, administrators, and project managers to ensure documentation accurately reflects implemented solutions.

Capture and document business processes, workflows, system configurations, data standards, and operational procedures.

Maintain version-controlled documentation as systems, applications, and workflows evolve.
-
Support user acceptance, implementation, deployment, and transition activities through training and documentation.

Develop train-the-trainer materials and knowledge-transfer approaches to support long-term customer self-sufficiency.

Facilitate workshops, demonstrations, office hours, and user-support sessions.

Collect user feedback and update training content based on lessons learned and operational needs.

Develop technical content for reports, implementation plans, transition plans, and project deliverables.

Review technical documentation for clarity, consistency, completeness, grammar, and usability.

Apply document templates, formatting standards, style guides, and accessibility requirements.

Support development of FAQs, knowledge-base articles, troubleshooting guides, and support materials.

Coordinate documentation reviews and incorporate comments from technical leads, customers, and subject-matter experts.

Maintain organized repositories of approved training and technical documentation.

Develop training and documentation that clearly communicates appropriate handling, sharing, publication, and protection of sensitive information.
REQUIRED SKILLS & TECHNICAL EXPERTISE

Strong technical writing, editing, instructional design, and presentation skills.

Ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and nontechnical audiences.

Experience developing instructor-led, virtual, self-paced, and hands-on technical training.

Working knowledge of the Esri platform, including ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, Survey123, Field Maps, Dashboards, and StoryMaps.

Experience documenting GIS applications, data workflows, enterprise systems, and operational procedures.

Ability to develop user guides, SOPs, technical manuals, quick-reference guides, and administrator documentation.

Experience conducting training-needs assessments and developing role-based curricula.

Strong facilitation and classroom-management skills.

Experience with screen capture, presentation, collaboration, and content-development tools.

Ability to work with technical subject-matter experts to gather, validate, and organize information.

Experience developing documentation for software implementation, modernization, migration, or operational-support projects.

Familiarity with Agile or iterative development environments and updating documentation throughout the system lifecycle.

Understanding of document version control, review workflows, and configuration management.

Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain consistency across large documentation sets.

Experience supporting geographically distributed or remote users preferred.

Familiarity with accessibility and Section 508 considerations for electronic documents and training materials preferred.

Experience supporting public-sector, environmental, infrastructure, land-management, or similarly complex organizations preferred.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in Technical Communication, English, Education, Instructional Design, Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Information Technology, Communications, or a related field.

Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, Technical Communication, GIS, or a related discipline preferred.

Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in technical writing, training, instructional design, GIS, or related technology environments.

Minimum of 3 years of experience developing and delivering technical training or GIS-related documentation.

Demonstrated experience creating technical manuals, user guides, SOPs, training materials, and knowledge-transfer documentation.

Experience delivering training to users with varying technical backgrounds and skill levels.

Experience working with GIS, enterprise applications, data-management systems, or similar technical platforms.

Experience supporting implementation, deployment, transition, or user-adoption activities.
-
Experience working with multidisciplinary technical teams and subject-matter experts.

Experience developing documentation and training for public-sector or similarly complex operational environments preferred.

Experience working with Tribal Nations, Indigenous communities, cultural-resource programs, or organizations managing culturally sensitive or sovereignty-related information preferred.

Esri, instructional-design, technical-writing, training, or comparable professional certifications preferred.
