Since 1991, TOR has had continuous open contracts to provide engineering and design services on an as-needed basis for Arizona Public Service Company, Salt River Project, Nevada Power Company, and NV Energy.

Job Description:
TOR Engineering is looking for an Electrical Overhead (OH) Transmission Engineer to provide engineering services in support of design and project management services related to transmission and distribution overhead lines projects for both utility and commercial clients. The Overhead lines typically vary from 500kV thru 12.47kV. This position is an entry level position open to new electrical engineering graduates and soon to be graduates. Electrical Engineering majors encouraged to apply. Mentorship and training will be provided as this is an entry level position.
Individual should have an eye for detail, have a good work ethic and be a team player. Familiarity with steel fabrication is a plus. Creativity is a must. Candidates should have the ability to lead their own project with support from internal engineers, designers and drafters. TOR is a small company with room for you to directly develop relationships with customers and foster company ties with many facets of the electric utility industry.
Full-time work at TOR Engineering office is required. Field visits to verify existing site conditions will be required, therefore candidates are expected to be based in Phoenix, Arizona to facilitate this activity. Company vehicles for such activities to be available.
Responsibilities Include:
- Develop the overhead line Plan & Profile drawings, base map that includes the topography, right of way, easements, pole locations, others utilities (water, sewer, telco, among others), etc.
- Review proposals for accurate scoping & scheduling and communicate commentary with colleagues in responsible charge of developing contracts & project budgets.
- Communicate with customers and attend meetings for design reviews and updates on the project.
- Communicate with various parties to ensure designs satisfy all customer’s internal stakeholders.
- Design of projects which adhere to National Electric Safety Code and meet the standards of client and TOR.
- Forecast project estimates and refine as designs progress from inception to construction.
- Coordinate the design of the Survey or Civil Engineering package with TOR subconsultants which includes topography, survey, etc.
- Coordinate the design of the Structural Engineering package with TOR subconsultants which includes steel poles, lattice structures, foundations, etc.
- Develop the pole framing details that includes pole height, framing materials, equipment placement, and grounding.
- Develop detailed Bills of Material documenting all major and minor items
- Develop and review of equipment and construction technical specifications.
- Perform yellow lines of own or others work with another engineer or designer.
- Perform site visits, take notes and measurements of field conditions to compare with existing project drawings.
- Perform various system analyses and studies including pole strength, conductor sag and tensions, pole guying, lightning mitigation, conductor rating studies, line constants calculations, loading tree, etc.
General Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil preferred) from an accredited university.
- Must be self-motivated and able to communicate and work well within a design team to ensure successful design of the entire project.
- Must be willing to adjust design criteria mid project to satisfy customer needs as they change with project development. Requires flexibility and high-level understanding of project overall goals.
- Knowledge of computer aided drafting (CAD) software is required with a strong preference for AutoCAD.
- Knowledge of Power Line System Computer Aided Design & Drafting (PLS-CADD) software is a preferred but not required.
- Selected interviewees will be asked to bring examples/pictures/explanations of their prior experiences/projects/hobbies/jobs showing mechanical inclinations and may be asked to take a short test to measure these abilities.
