Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Labor & Delivery (L&D) Registered Nurse (RN) to join our rapid response team. This vital role involves providing immediate, expert nursing care during labor, delivery, and postpartum periods, ensuring the safety and well-being of mothers and newborns. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in acute care settings, including obstetrics, critical care, and emergency medicine, with a focus on rapid response situations. Key responsibilities include assessing laboring patients, managing complex obstetric emergencies, coordinating multidisciplinary interventions, and supporting families through high-stakes situations. The RN will utilize advanced knowledge of medical procedures such as suturing, IV infusion, fetal monitoring, and neonatal resuscitation. Familiarity with electronic health record systems like Epic or Cerner is essential for accurate documentation. This role demands a proactive approach to patient assessment and intervention within a fast-paced hospital or maternity center setting.
Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to women during labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery with an emphasis on safety and comfort.
- Respond swiftly to obstetric emergencies such as postpartum hemorrhage or fetal distress by implementing evidence-based interventions.
- Monitor fetal heart rates using electronic fetal monitoring equipment and interpret data to guide clinical decisions.
- Administer medications including pain management agents, antibiotics, and anesthesia-related drugs following strict aseptic techniques.
- Perform procedures such as suturing, catheterization, IV insertion, and oxygen therapy with precision and adherence to infection control protocols.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including obstetricians, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, and support staff to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
- Document all patient interactions accurately within electronic health records systems like Epic or Cerner while maintaining HIPAA compliance.
- Educate patients and families about labor processes, postpartum care, breastfeeding support, and newborn care.
- Participate in ongoing training related to trauma medicine, infectious disease protocols, neonatal resuscitation procedures (NRP), and emergency response procedures.
- Assist in discharge planning by coordinating follow-up care for mothers and infants post-delivery.
Qualifications
- Valid RN license with current registration in the state of practice.
- Minimum of three years’ experience in labor & delivery nursing within a hospital or birthing center environment.
- Critical care experience preferred; familiarity with Level I or Level II trauma centers is advantageous.
- Proficiency in advanced obstetric procedures including suturing, fetal monitoring interpretation (ICD-10 coding knowledge beneficial), and neonatal resuscitation.
- Experience working with electronic health records systems such as Epic or Cerner; familiarity with EMR/EHR management is essential.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology related to obstetrics, neonatal care, anesthesia administration, and trauma medicine.
- Ability to perform under pressure during emergencies involving acute pain management or trauma scenarios.
- Excellent communication skills for effective triage assessments and patient education across diverse populations.
- Knowledge of infection control practices including sterile processing techniques.
- Additional certifications such as Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), or Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) are highly desirable.
