JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Community & Operations Coordinator supports HOME’s daily operations and community partnerships. This role manages core office functions, coordinates the emergency shelter rotation, and serves as the main liaison to congregations, volunteers and the part-time van driver/client support position to ensure smooth weekly hosting and consistent support for client needs. The Community & Operations Coordinator oversees volunteer recruitment, orientation, and training, representing HOME at interdenominational, community and fundraising events, including public speaking engagements. This position manages donation intake, inventory, and donor acknowledgments. This position also provides on‑call assistance for urgent client or shelter needs and performs other duties assigned by the Executive Director to support the mission of HOME of Somerset County.
LOCATION: In person at the HOME office, congregation locations, or in the community as needed with occasional evening and weekends based on agency events.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Manage daily office operations, including mail distribution, phone coverage, supply inventory, main service contact and basic equipment oversight (printer, copier, etc.).
2. Organize and maintain the master schedule for host and support congregations, ensuring full volunteer coverage for all hosting weeks; coordinate the emergency shelter rotation as the primary liaison to volunteer coordinators and congregations; serve as liaison for the Cot Crew to support smooth weekly operations, including being the main contact for arranging hotel stays and meals when needed.
3. Provide volunteer coordinators with client information prior to hosting, including names, ages, medical needs, allergies, and any scheduling details related to time at the congregations; maintain ongoing communication with volunteer coordinators during hosting weeks to support client needs and operations, serving as a liaison to volunteers and coordinating special volunteer projects and intern participation.
4. Lead community engagement efforts, including volunteer and congregation recruitment, orientation, and ongoing training to strengthen program capacity; attend in-person meetings as required by Executive Director.
5. Be the primary liaison for the part‑time van driver/client support role, ensuring clear communication of client needs, schedules, and agency priorities; coordinate routine vehicle maintenance and repairs.
6. Recruit volunteers for agency and client support and maintain a “talent bank” of specific volunteer services.
7. Represent HOME of Somerset County, along with other staff, at community events including interdenominational programs, fundraising projects and public relations opportunities.
8. Provide on‑call support for emergencies during off‑hours, responding to urgent client or shelter needs as required.
9. Oversee donation management and special initiatives, including holiday support programs, client‑specific needs, inventory tracking, and donor acknowledgment processes; issue agency thank you notes and tax ID receipts.
10. Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director to support agency operations and program needs.
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Executive Director. In the absence of the Director, President of the Board of Trustees.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION: College preferred.
COMPUTER LITERATE: in Microsoft Word, Excel, G-Suite and PowerPoint.
JUDGEMENT AND INITIATIVE: Requires well-developed ability to handle sensitive and confidential issues diplomatically. Ability to analyze, comprehend and interpret laws, rules, regulations and procedures. Ability to maintain positive public/working relations with volunteers and congregations.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Well-developed ability to communicate in English orally and in writing with all levels of staff, clients, and the community. Strong comfortability and skill in public speaking and giving presentations to various sizes of groups.
CONFIDENTIALITY: Ability to maintain confidentiality of client and volunteer information/files at all times.
STRONG PERSONAL INTERACTION SKILLS: Comfortable with working in an interfaith environment. Comfortable in a setting demanding multiple personal contacts per day, including interactions with children and interactions under emotional circumstances.
EXPERIENCE: Prior position(s) in office setting; prior experience as a volunteer helpful but not required.
