Whitmore Steel is a 30-year, AISC-certified structural steel fabricator and erector based in San Diego. We self-perform erection with our own crews, allowing our engineering, shop, and field teams to work as one throughout the project lifecycle.
We deliver structural steel and miscellaneous metals for commercial, healthcare, industrial, and mission critical projects throughout the western United States. As we continue expanding into data center and mission critical construction, we’re looking for an experienced technical leader who enjoys solving complex fabrication and erection challenges and mentoring the next generation of engineers.
The Opportunity
As our Senior Project Engineer, you are the technical leader on the project.
You’ll own the technical execution on our most complex work - from drawing review and constructability through engineering coordination and field support. You’ll partner closely with Project Managers, detailers, the shop, field crews, engineers of record, and general contractors to ensure what gets detailed is practical to fabricate, efficient to erect, and successful in the field.

This is a senior technical leadership role with multiple paths for growth. What You’ll Do
- Own technical execution on WSI’s largest and most complex structural steel projects.
- Lead drawing review, constructability reviews, and engineering coordination from detailing through erection.
- Review shop drawings, erection drawings, connection details, and fabrication packages for accuracy and buildability.
- Lead RFIs, submittals, engineering revisions, and coordination with Engineers of Record and General Contractors.
- Partner with Project Managers to identify technical risks early and develop practical fabrication and erection solutions.
- Provide technical support to shop production and field crews throughout fabrication and erection.
- Drive clash detection, model coordination, and interface resolution using Tekla Structures and BIM 360.
- Mentor Project Engineers and establish technical standards across the engineering team.
- Continuously improve engineering workflows, drawing review processes, and project execution standards.
What You Bring
- 8+ years of structural steel fabrication, detailing, project engineering, or field experience.
- Strong understanding of structural steel fabrication, erection sequencing, and constructability.
- Deep command of shop drawings, erection drawings, and fabrication practices.
- Strong working knowledge of AISC standards and connection design intent.
- Experience coordinating with Engineers of Record, detailers, fabricators, and field crews.
- Experience with Tekla Structures, PowerFab, BIM 360, or similar software.
- The confidence and technical judgment to mentor others and become the engineering resource the company relies on.
- Data center, industrial, healthcare, or mission critical experience is a plus, but not required.
