Medical Assistant – OB/GYN Overview
Veema Women's Health Center is seeking a compassionate, organized, and motivated Medical Assistant to join our growing OB/GYN team. The Medical Assistant plays a vital role in providing exceptional care to our obstetrical and gynecological patients while supporting providers in delivering efficient, high-quality medical services.
The ideal candidate is a team player who thrives in a fast-paced environment, demonstrates excellent communication skills, and is committed to delivering outstanding patient experiences. Women's health or OB/GYN experience is preferred but not required for the right candidate.
Responsibilities
- Welcome patients and perform intake, including obtaining medical history, vital signs, medication reconciliation, and updating electronic medical records (Athena EMR).
- Prepare patients and examination rooms for provider visits and ensure all necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment are available.
- Assist physicians and nurse practitioners during gynecologic procedures, annual exams, prenatal visits, IUD insertions/removals, endometrial biopsies, colposcopies, HSG/HyFoSy procedures, and other in-office treatments.
- Serve as a chaperone during sensitive examinations and procedures, ensuring patient comfort, dignity, and safety.
- Scribe patient encounters when needed, accurately documenting provider findings, assessments, and treatment plans in the electronic medical record.
- Assist providers by preparing, printing, and organizing laboratory, imaging, referral, and prescription orders to ensure timely patient care.
- Schedule and coordinate follow-up appointments, imaging studies, laboratory testing, and procedures according to provider recommendations.
- Collect and process laboratory specimens, perform urine pregnancy tests, urinalysis, and assist with phlebotomy as needed.
- Administer medications and injections under provider supervision.
- Educate patients regarding medications, prenatal care, procedures, post-procedure instructions, and follow-up care.
- Coordinate laboratory orders, imaging referrals, prior authorizations, prescription refill requests, and communication with pharmacies when appropriate.
- Manage patient flow to ensure providers remain on schedule while maintaining excellent patient service.
- Accurately document patient information and clinical activities in Athena EMR while maintaining HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality.
- Perform additional clinical and administrative duties as assigned to support the daily operations of the practice.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Medical Assistant certification preferred.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or ability to obtain within the probationary period.
- Previous experience in an OB/GYN, women's health, family medicine, or medical office setting preferred.
- Experience using Electronic Medical Records (Athena EMR experience is a plus).
- Strong phlebotomy and injection skills are preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and multitasking abilities.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment while maintaining a positive attitude.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) is strongly preferred.
