Job Description:
At Simplifi EDU, we believe the middle school years are where students either fall in love with learning or quietly decide it isn't for them, and a great tutor makes all the difference.
This role isn't about drilling worksheets or racing through a textbook. Middle schoolers don't always arrive with the organizational skills, goals, and drive that older students have, so our job is different: we build the connection, curiosity, and habits that turn a disorganized, overwhelmed, or checked-out student into a confident one. That means meeting students where they are, helping them get organized, and making the subject genuinely enjoyable to learn.
We're looking for someone who lights up around this age group. If you love working with middle schoolers, take real pride in the subjects you teach, and know how to keep a 12–14 year-old engaged for a full session, keep reading.
Who We're Looking For:
We're hiring online middle school tutors who bring two things together: genuine enthusiasm for their subject and the skill to work with middle schoolers specifically.
Here are some qualities we especially value in our tutors:
- A natural ability to connect with middle schoolers and keep them engaged, focused, and motivated, even when they don't yet have their own academic goals
- Patience and warmth in working with students still figuring out how to learn
- A knack for helping students get organized and build executive functioning skills (managing their time, breaking down assignments, and following through)
- Real command of your subject and the ability to make it genuinely enjoyable
A note on subjects: We support four core subjects: English, history, science, and math. Most middle schoolers need help in two or three of them, and they do best with one tutor rather than several. You can absolutely have a favorite, but we want you to be genuinely enthusiastic about every subject you teach. That enthusiasm is what makes a subject click for a student.
What You'll Work On: Middle school tutoring at Simplifi EDU is more than subject help. Nearly every family wants executive-function support with organization, time management, and planning alongside academics. You'll teach across one or more of the four core subjects while helping students build the habits and confidence to manage school on their own.
Backgrounds & Credentials We Value:
None of these are required, but any of them is a plus:
- Middle grades or secondary certification (6–12 or 7–12), ideally with a subject focus
- A Master of Arts in Teaching, or Curriculum & Instruction
- A special education background, which builds the executive-function and learning-support skills our students need most
- A background in educational psychology or child development, paired with real teaching experience
- Reading or literacy specialist training
We don't require certification; we evaluate every candidate on how strong an educator they are.
Key Responsibilities & Expectations:
- Scheduling & Attendance: Maintain a consistent weekly lesson schedule with students
- Parent Communication: Clearly communicate student progress, challenges, and next steps between sessions
- Lesson Documentation: Provide thorough session reports documenting what was covered and the plan to move the student forward
Desired Availability:
- At least 3 weekdays, Monday–Friday, from 1:00 pm–8:00 pm Pacific Time
- Available to tutor at least one day on the weekends
Qualifications:
- Direct experience working with middle school students (tutoring or classroom)
- Genuine enthusiasm for and command of each core subject you teach, whether that's one or several
- Demonstrated ability to keep younger students engaged, motivated, and organized
- Experience supporting executive-function skills (organization, planning, time management, study habits)
- Experience working with students who have learning differences such as ADHD, dyslexia, or processing challenges
- Familiarity with online teaching platforms and digital learning tools
- A copy of your college transcript will be required prior to hiring. If unavailable, a copy of your college diploma is acceptable
Application and Interview Process Overview:
Applying through Indeed (including the application questions below) is the first step in our hiring process and serves as a preliminary application.
Select candidates will then be invited to complete a brief secondary application in our applicant tracking system (TutorCruncher). Candidates who advance will be asked to participate in three short interviews.
Our hiring process typically takes around 2 weeks to complete.
