Tampa Bay area Fire Protection Engineering firm seeks a full time Fire Protection System CAD Designer at its Oldsmar office. We are a specialty engineering firm with locations in Plant City and Oldsmar, Florida, that provides fire protection design and consulting services to local contractors, owners, architects, and the government.

Position Summary: Under supervision of Fire Protection Engineers, performs a variety of duties associated with the planning, analysis, and design of assigned fire protection design projects (fire sprinkler and/or fire alarm) primarily for new construction and facility renovation projects.
Required Availability: Must be available to work onsite a minimum of 32 hours per week. Remote / Hybrid work arrangements available upon eligibility.
Pay: $25 to $35 per hour - Depending on Experience & Certifications
Essential Functions include, but are not limited to:
- Creates, prepares, and updates semi-complex design layouts and schematic drawings of fire sprinkler systems and fire alarm systems for buildings and structures using AutoCAD software.
- Participates in determining specifications necessary for layouts and drawings; including maintaining current industry practices and any client specific requirements.
- Performs hydraulic calculations related to fire protection piping systems using industry standard software.
- Performs basic electrical calculations related to fire alarm systems using industry standard software.
- Studies and maintains knowledge in Building codes and NFPA standards related to the building construction and fire protection industry.
- Assists senior designers with basic project management related to assigned projects.
- Effectively identifying problems as they occur and taking appropriate steps to solve them in situations where the problem is not difficult or complex. Refers complex, unusual problems to Engineering leads.
- Participates in the review of produced works and creation of supporting documents for adherence to drafting standards.
- Attends meetings, compiles report data, and provides supporting presentations to manager and clients.
- Occasionally performs site inspections and generates field reports.
- Acts a dependable team player ready to learn and assist in whatever capacity is needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- 1-2 years of design experience using AutoCAD (2013 or later) required. 3+ years of experience in fire sprinkler design and AutoCad preferred. Revit experience preferred.
- Mechanical, electrical, fire protection or fire alarm drafting and design experience preferred.
- Building Information Modeling (BIM) experience preferred.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering, drafting or related field is preferred.
- Strong mechanical or electrical engineering design aptitude preferred.
- Interest in developing and/or expanding your career in fire protection, electrical or mechanical design.
- NICET certification in Water-Based Systems Layout is preferred.
- Authorization to work in the United States is required.
Additional Skills / Knowledge Requirements:
- Must be highly proficient with computers and typical standard office software, including Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and CAD programs.
- Working knowledge of drafting standards, operations, methods, and practices.
- Basic understanding of building construction and methods of construction.
- Basic understanding of mathematics and physics, relevant to design and hydraulics.
- Ability to read & interpret contract drawings and customer sketches.
- Ability to create and modify drawings in CAD software.
- Ability to read and understand units of measurement and perform general mathematical equations.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
- Willingness to continually learn and adapt to changes.
- Must have a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and the ability to work as part of a team with little oversight and direction needed.
- Must be self-motivated, detailed-oriented, and work well under tight deadlines.
- Self-starter, motivated with ability to start and finish a project on time.
- Must have strong communication skills and the ability to effectively interface with clients and work collaboratively with peers.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- Position will spend the majority of time working in a climate-controlled office setting.
- While performing the essential functions of this job the employee must be able to regularly work in a variety of physical positions, including sitting for long period of time as well as bending, standing, lifting, and walking.
- Travel to client sites will be required on an occasional basis, which could include field work in all outdoor weather conditions.
- Job duties could require walking and standing for long periods of time, climbing and descending ladders/steps for site surveys.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds.
- Must have the ability to use telephone and computer to communicate and follow written and verbal instructions.
