POSITION SUMMARY
Reports to the Inpatient Manager. Performs professional nursing duties in the care of women and newborn patients in the obstetric, women’s health department and emergency room settings in the hospital, based on validated competencies achieve while working in a low risk OB setting. Will work in Inpatient and ER as needed.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Initiates and utilizes the nursing process to meet the holistic needs of the patient and family while adhering to the professional standards set forth by American Nurses’ Association.
2. Observes the patients clinical condition: recognizes, identifies, and interprets serious and/or emergent situations while initiating appropriate nursing interventions. Proficient knowledge of EFM, care of laboring patient, medication administration, monitoring of patients during self-administration of nitrous oxide, newborn care, and postpartum care.
3. Works with Inpatient Manager and Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse to provide Labor & Delivery (L & D) coverage when needed.
4. Develops and implements patient/family teaching programs base on mutually identified health care goals.
5. Documents all observations, nursing interventions, therapeutic measures administered, and status of coordinated activities between nursing and other professional disciplines.
6. Evaluates the patient’s plan of care and revises plan as needed.
7. Safeguards the patient’s right to privacy by judiciously protecting information of a confidential manner.
8. Understands the developmental needs of all patients throughout the continuum of life; is able to adjust care to these needs; and documentation reflects this understanding. Demonstrates teamwork by assisting with patient care within their skill sets outside of L&D.
9. Assumes responsibility and accountability for individual nursing judgments and actions.
10. Provides guidance and leadership to other personnel in the form of in-service and orientation/preceptorship and participates in committee activities.
11. Participates in departmental and organizational performance improvement activities.
12. Utilizes incident and medication error reporting protocols per MHC policies.
13. Participates in continuing education activities associated with Labor & Delivery.
14. Facilitates patient care across multiple disciplines, departments, and other non-MHC agencies through referrals and other business operations.
15. Performs daily SQSS tasks and records in system as assigned. Performs daily/weekly controls for laboratory testing.
16. Schedules or assignments may be changed to meet the needs of the department.
17. Provides guidance to support staff to include PCTs and AA. Assists providers as needed.
18. Embraces the MHC customer service model, providing a positive customer service attitude at all times.
19. Will work in Inpatient and ER as needed.
