MEB is seeking a Site Safety & Health Officer (SSHO) to support active heavy civil construction operations in the Richmond/Petersburg area.
This role is heavily field-focused and works directly with project leadership, superintendents, foremen, craft professionals, subcontractors, and safety leadership to help maintain safe, productive, and compliant jobsites.
We are looking for someone with practical construction knowledge, strong communication skills, and the ability to earn respect in the field. This is not a desk-only safety role. The ideal candidate understands how work actually gets built and can help support crews while maintaining high safety standards.

Conduct regular field inspections and hazard assessments

Identify unsafe conditions and support corrective actions

Support compliance with OSHA, company, and project-specific safety requirements

Monitor high-hazard work activities including excavation, confined space entry, energy isolation, scaffolding, and elevated work

Assist with permit-required work activities and safety controls

Conduct jobsite safety training and orientations

Support field leadership with Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs) and safe work planning

Help reinforce safe work practices across crews and subcontractors

Maintain strong working relationships with project teams and craft personnel

Support incident investigations and root cause analysis

Assist with injury response, emergency situations, and corrective action implementation

Maintain training records, inspection reports, and required safety documentation

Support OSHA recordkeeping and project safety reporting requirements

Assist with management of PPE and safety equipment

Support safety program implementation and continuous improvement efforts

Participate in project safety planning and ongoing risk assessments

Heavy civil construction experience
-
Strong field presence and communication skills

OSHA 30 certification (minimum requirement)

STS-C certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment

Working knowledge of construction operations and jobsite hazards

Ability to communicate effectively with field leadership and crews

Proficient with Microsoft Office and general computer systems
We are open to candidates from several backgrounds, including:

Prior SSHO or construction safety experience

Extensive field leadership experience transitioning into safety

Foreman or superintendent-level experience with strong safety involvement

Experience supporting active construction operations and field crews
-
Current STS-C or ability to obtain within 30 days required. CHST certification preferred

Experience on heavy civil, industrial, water/wastewater, or government construction projects

This position is primarily field-based and requires regular interaction with active construction operations. The role will primarily support projects in the Richmond/Petersburg area, with occasional support to other regional operations as needed.
