Overview
The cook is responsible for preparing nutritious, appealing meals that meet residents’ dietary needs and follow established menus. This role ensures safe food handling, maintains a clean kitchen environment, and supports a positive dining experience for older adults in a residential care setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Meal Preparation — Prepare breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks according to menus, recipes, and dietary guidelines (including low‑sodium, diabetic, and texture‑modified diets).
- Food Safety — Follow all sanitation and safety standards; maintain proper food storage, labeling, and temperature control.
- Menu Compliance — Execute menus created by dietary managers or nutritionists; adjust recipes when needed for resident preferences or restrictions.
- Kitchen Maintenance — Clean and sanitize kitchen surfaces, equipment, and utensils; ensure dishwashing and waste disposal are completed.
- Inventory Management — Monitor stock levels, rotate inventory, and communicate supply needs to management.
- Resident Interaction — Provide friendly, respectful service; respond to resident meal requests within facility guidelines.
- Team Collaboration — Work closely with dietary aides, caregivers, and nursing staff to support resident well‑being.

Responsibilities
- Assist in meal preparation, ensuring adherence to recipes and portion sizes
- Operate kitchen equipment safely and efficiently, including knives, slicers, ovens, and mixers
- Prepare ingredients through slicing, chopping, cooking, and plating to meet quality standards
- Maintain cleanliness of workstations, utensils, and kitchen areas in compliance with food safety regulations
- Support food handling procedures to ensure proper storage, temperature control, and sanitation
- Communicate effectively with kitchen staff to coordinate meal production and delivery timelines
- Follow safety standards during all aspects of food production and cleaning routines
Experience
- Previous dietary department or dietary aide experience preferred but not required; training provided for motivated candidates
- Food service or restaurant experience demonstrating knowledge of food preparation and customer service skills
- Familiarity with food safety management practices and safety standards in production environments
- Culinary experience including knife skills, slicing techniques, and meal assembly
- Experience operating commercial kitchen equipment and adhering to recipe guidelines
- Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with kitchen team members
- Knowledge of catering processes and meal presentation techniques is a plus
