Status: Full-Time / Part-Time / Per Diem
FLSA: Non-Exempt
Schedule: Primarily 8:00 AM–4:00 PM and/or 4:00 PM–12:00 AM (may vary)

Position Summary
The Residential Case Aide serves as the primary support staff within the 24/7 Family Shelter. This position helps ensure the shelter remains safe, welcoming, organized, and family-centered while assisting shelter residents with daily living needs and supporting case managers in achieving housing goals.
The Residential Case Aide is responsible for maintaining daily shelter operations, assisting with intakes, monitoring safety, providing supportive services, documenting client interactions, and ensuring compliance with shelter policies.
This role is highly interactive and requires excellent customer service, professionalism, and the ability to work with families experiencing crisis.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Resident Support
- Welcome new families into the shelter.
- Complete intake paperwork and room orientation.
- Explain shelter rules, expectations, and daily schedules.
- Assist families in settling into the shelter.
- Build positive, respectful relationships with residents.
- Provide emotional support while maintaining professional boundaries.
- Monitor resident well-being throughout the shift.
- Assist with conflict resolution before issues escalate.
- Encourage participation in case management appointments and programming.
Shelter Operations
- Maintain a safe, clean, welcoming shelter environment.
- Conduct routine room and common area inspections.
- Complete daily shelter walkthroughs.
- Monitor security cameras and building access.
- Conduct hourly safety checks.
- Assist with laundry room operations.
- Ensure donated items are organized.
- Help maintain inventory of supplies.
- Report maintenance issues immediately.
Client Services
- Answer intake and emergency phone calls.
- Complete initial screening information.
- Forward emergencies to the on-call supervisor.
- Assist families with transportation arrangements.
- Help distribute hygiene items, food, diapers, cleaning supplies, and household necessities.
- Coordinate meal schedules and volunteer activities.
- Assist with children's activities when appropriate.
Documentation
- Complete shift logs.
- Document all significant client interactions.
- Record incidents and accidents.
- Complete room inspection forms.
- Track supply distribution.
- Maintain confidentiality of client information.
- Assist case managers with obtaining documentation.
Team Collaboration
- Participate in daily shift change communication.
- Attend staff meetings.
- Communicate resident concerns to case managers.
- Work collaboratively with volunteers.
- Assist with agency events and community projects.
Additional Responsibilities
- Opening and closing the shelter.
- Participate in emergency preparedness activities.
- Assist during severe weather events.
- Cross-train in shelter operations.
- Other duties assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Associate's or Bachelor's Degree preferred.
- Experience working with homeless or vulnerable populations preferred.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm during crisis situations.
- Basic computer skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Valid NJ Driver's License.
- Reliable transportation.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Successful background check.
