Hyperion Automation is seeking a hands-on Automation Engineering who can combine strong technical credibility with practical day-to-day leadership.
This is a player-coach position. You will contribute directly to complex custom automation projects while guiding technical work, reviewing deliverables, coaching team members, and helping the team make timely, well-reasoned decisions.
This is a discipline-level technical leadership role without direct reports. The Engineering Manager will retain formal people management, staffing, compensation, department priorities, and overall Engineering accountability.
What You Will Do
- Provide day-to-day technical leadership across controls, robotics, and automation engineering work.
- Design, program, integrate, test, troubleshoot, and commission complex automation systems.
- Set routine technical direction for assigned projects and workstreams.
- Review controls architecture, PLC and HMI programs, robotics applications, electrical documentation, industrial networks, machine-safety functions, test plans, and commissioning-readiness deliverables.
- Require corrections or pause work that is incomplete, unsafe, insufficiently reviewed, difficult to maintain, or otherwise unready to move downstream.
- Coach team members through technical challenges, project decisions, prioritization, communication, and execution concerns.
- Give direct, constructive feedback and help others develop stronger judgment, ownership, and independence.
- Identify labor drift, technical risk, incomplete deliverables, and execution concerns before they become project surprises.
- Help the team evaluate technical options, risks, costs, and tradeoffs without allowing routine decisions to stall.
- Partner with Project Management, Mechanical Engineering, Assembly, Supply Chain, Sales, and clients throughout the project lifecycle.
- Help improve programming standards, reusable code, templates, testing practices, design reviews, and commissioning readiness.
- Serve as Project Owner or technical lead on larger, higher-risk controls or robotics work when assigned.
What You Bring
- At least 7 years of progressive experience in industrial automation, controls engineering, or robotics.
- Direct experience delivering complex integrated automation systems in a custom automation, systems-integration, or engineer-to-order environment.
- Strong hands-on experience with PLC and HMI system design, programming, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
- Experience leading technical work, reviewing the work of others, coaching team members, and making timely technical decisions.
- Strong understanding of controls architecture, electrical schematics, I/O systems, industrial networks, sensors, motion control, machine safety, and integrated equipment.
- A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, controls engineering, mechatronics, robotics, or automation, or an equivalent combination of education and directly relevant experience.
- Ability to communicate directly and constructively during difficult technical or people-related conversations.
- Willingness to travel for critical project phases, commissioning, technical escalation, and team support, including domestic and occasional international travel.
Preferred Experience
- Advanced proficiency with Allen-Bradley controls platforms.
- Hands-on experience integrating and programming industrial robots such as FANUC, KUKA, ABB, Yaskawa, or similar platforms.
- Experience with multiple PLC, HMI, robotics, motion-control, vision, or upper-level integration platforms.
- Experience improving engineering standards, reusable code, documentation, testing, or design-review processes.
