In this role, you’ll support financial stability statewide by conducting high-quality audits that protect public resources and promote sound fiscal practices.
About the Role
As an Auditor, you’ll perform a wide range of Financial, Attestation, Single Audit, and Statutory Compliance audits in accordance with Federal and State requirements and professional accounting and auditing standards. Your work will play a direct role in upholding public trust, strengthening financial reporting, and supporting good governance across Michigan.
What You’ll Do
- Perform audit testing across key financial areas including cash, investments, accounts receivable, revenues, expenditures, payables, payroll, pensions, OPEB (Other Post-Employment Benefits), inventories, capital assets, debt, fund balance, and net position.
- Assist in drafting and reviewing financial statements to ensure accuracy, clarity, and compliance.
- Participate in internal and external training sessions—and contribute by preparing and delivering training presentations.
- Support the development and enhancement of auditing and accounting guides and manuals used by Local Government Units (LGUs), CPA firms, and Treasury staff.

Please Note: The listed salary range reflects the minimum rate at the entry (9) level through the maximum rate at the experienced (P11) level. Qualifying years of experience are counted post–bachelor’s degree. Candidates will be reviewed to determine the appropriate level for placement. The final salary will be based on the selected candidate’s education and experience.

PLEASE NOTE: New Hires for the Auditor classification will receive a one-time signing bonus of $2,500. The bonus will be paid out as $1,250 gross pay adjustment on the employee's first pay warrant and the remaining $1,250 will be paid upon completion of one year (2,080 hours) of satisfactory service. If the employee leaves within one year of the appointment, they will be required to pay back the entire bonus. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Education
Possession of a bachelor's degree with at least 24 semester (36 term) credits in accounting.
Experience
Note: A position is considered professional if the job requires a bachelor's degree. Qualifying ‘professional experience’ is only taken into consideration post-bachelor’s degree.
Auditor 9
No specific type or amount is required.
Auditor 10
One year of professional experience auditing accounting, financial, and operations records equivalent to an Auditor 9.
Auditor P11
Two years of professional experience auditing accounting, financial, and operations records equivalent to an Auditor, including one year equivalent to an Auditor 10. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Official Transcripts. Foreign Transcripts. Applicants who possess a degree from a foreign college or university
MUST have their academic credentials evaluated or converted into U.S. educational equivalents unless the degree has been recognized the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Civil Service accepts evaluations of foreign credentials from National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE).

Work must be performed in the state of Michigan. If you currently reside outside of Michigan, you must relocate to Michigan to perform the duties of this position
prior to being appointed to the position. Relocation expenses are not reimbursed.
Remote Work: To work remotely, the selected candidate must have a safe and appropriate designated workspace or workstation for performance of work and secure and sufficient internet access of commercial cable or wireless broadband with minimum speeds of 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload. Please note that occasional onsite work will be required, including, but not limited to, monthly in-person staff meetings. Remote Work approval is at the discretion of the appointing authority and is subject to change and can be ended at any time for any reason.
E-Verify. The Michigan Department of Treasury participates in E-Verify and will provide the federal government with your form I-9 information to confirm that you are authorized to work in the U.S.
Interviews. Interviews may occur virtually using Microsoft Teams. No prior experience with Teams is necessary. Instructions and tips will be provided to all candidates scheduled for an interview using Microsoft Teams.
