Mesa Provisions is looking for a part time host to join our tight-knit, guest-focused team. We believe the dining experience should be approachable but professional, and service should feel effortless but attentive. The host stand is one of the most important places of the restaurant, setting the tone for the guest experience. We are looking for someone who is charismatic, detail oriented, efficient, and with an interest in fine dining and providing excellent service.
Duties and Responsibilities Include:
Guest Service and Hospitality
As the first impression of the restaurant, you’re expected to be welcoming and warm to guests. You’ll be asked to balance guests’ requests and concerns professionally while maintaining an understanding of the restaurant’s best interest. You must address each guest with care and attention.
Multitasking and Problem Solving
This role requires quick thinking and thoughtful decision making. The decisions you make directly affect the flow of service and guest impressions. Being able to weigh the needs of the guest and the restaurant in a timely manner while maintaining composure and communication is essential.
Understanding Reservation System
You must have a thorough understanding of the reservation system and the ability to use it efficiently. At any given time during your shift, you will need to be familiar with server sections, seating rotation, upcoming reservations, and the pace of service at each table.
Professional Appearance and Conduct
A polished appearance and composed demeanor are essential. You represent the restaurant’s brand at all times. You’re expected to adhere to the dress code policy, cell phone policy, maintain a clean uniform, and limit personal conversations in guests’ presence.
Problem Resolution
If something goes wrong or a guest is upset, you’re expected to handle it gracefully acknowledging issues, offering solutions or explanations, and involving management promptly without disrupting the guest experience. Maintaining a composed demeanor and polite tone is required and expected.
Communication and Teamwork
Clear, concise communication ensures smooth service, especially during busy periods. You are expected to effectively communicate and coordinate with servers, bartenders, kitchen staff, support staff, and management during high-volume service periods.
Cleanliness and Organization
You’re expected to keep the host stand clean and organized at all times. This includes organizing and replacing menus, cleaning surfaces, and following guidelines for storing personal belongings and beverages. Your workstation is very visible and frequently visited.
Host-Specific Responsibilities:
- Greet and welcome guests cordially and timely as they arrive and leave.
- Navigate the reservation system with a deep understanding of how to balance seating rotation, guest requests, server sections, and restaurant limitations.
- Escort guests to their table and provide menus.
- Organize and maintain up-to-date and clean menus throughout the restaurant.
- Answer the phone in a timely manner and handle inquiries and reservation requests.
- Provide accurate information about the restaurant; be knowledgeable about menu items, pricing, reservation availability and capacity, and restaurant policies.
- Assist in polishing glassware and silverware when needed.
Requirements:
- Experience: At least one year of host experience. Experience with reservation systems, preferably OpenTable. An understanding of providing customer service in a fine dining atmosphere.
- Schedule: Availability in the afternoons and evenings, for a fixed schedule of 2-4 shifts a week. Able to work weekends and holidays.
- Physical requirements: Ability to be on your feet up to eight (8) hours at a time with limited periods for break, walk up and down stairs, lift up to 30 lbs repeatedly during the shift, and handle high stress with large volume of work to be performed in short time intervals.
