Perry Street Prep seeks dependable, energetic, and student-centered School Operations Assistants to join our operations team. In this role, you will provide flexible operational and student support throughout the school day—helping to ensure that our campus runs smoothly, safely, and efficiently from the first bell to dismissal.
School Operations Assistants work across the campus to support students, staff, and school operations as needed. This is not a single-task role—you will move throughout the building, respond to operational needs in real time, support student transitions and supervision, and assist with a range of logistics that keep the school day running. The ideal candidate is reliable, proactive, comfortable on their feet, and committed to doing whatever it takes to support a great school day for every student.
This position reports directly to the Operations Manager and works closely with the Operations Coordinator, school leaders, and instructional staff.
Status: Part-Time, Non-Exempt, Hourly
Shifts Available: Morning Shift: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–1:30 PM | Afternoon Shift: Monday–Friday, 11:00 AM–4:30 PM
Key Responsibilities
School Operations Assistants are responsible for a mix of student support and operational logistics duties. Specific assignments will vary by shift and daily school needs.
Student Support & Supervision
● Support student arrival, including directing students, monitoring entry points, and assisting with attendance verification;
● Assist with student dismissal, ensuring scholars are safely released according to school procedures;
● Conduct hallway sweeps and support student transitions between classes, lunch, specials, and other activities;
● Supervise students during lunch and recess, maintaining a safe, orderly, and positive environment;
● Assist with classroom and front office coverage as assigned by the Operations Manager or school administration;
● Support students with behavioral redirection and de-escalation, communicating concerns to school leadership promptly;
● Question any non-school visitors and direct them to the main office to sign in;
● Report any safety concerns, disciplinary issues, or emergencies to building administration immediately.
Operational Logistics Support
● Sort and distribute incoming packages, deliveries, and materials throughout the building;
● Restock supplies in classrooms, common areas, and operational stations as needed;
● Support event setup and breakdown for school events, testing windows, picture days, and ceremonies;
● Assist with inventory management, including tracking and organizing supplies;
● Run operational errands throughout the building and campus as directed;
● Assist with copying, material preparation, and other logistical support for staff as needed;
● Support front office operations during high-traffic periods, including phones, visitor sign-in, and general assistance;
● Maintain cleanliness and organization of common areas, hallways, and shared spaces;
● Perform any other duties or responsibilities as designated by the Operations Manager or school administration.
While all SOAs share core responsibilities, daily duties are organized by shift:
Morning Shift (8:00 AM – 1:30 PM):
● Arrival support and front door monitoring
● Coverage support as needed
● Attendance verification support
● Hallway sweeps and morning transitions
● Front office support during high-traffic morning hours
● Lunch and recess supervision
● Operational tasks as assigned
Afternoon Shift (11:00 AM – 4:30 PM):
● Lunch and recess supervision
● Coverage support as needed
● Dismissal support and student release
● Event setup and breakdown
● Inventory restocking and package sorting
● Operational tasks and logistical support through end of day
Qualifications
Required Education and Experience
● High school diploma or equivalent required;
● Experience working with children or youth in a school, camp, childcare, or similar setting preferred;
● Ability to work on your feet for extended periods and move throughout the building throughout the shift;
● Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, and families;
● Reliable, punctual, and dependable—consistent attendance is essential in this role;
● Ability to follow directions, take initiative, and adapt to changing needs throughout the day;
● Ability to pass required background and reference checks and a negative tuberculosis test prior to employment.
Preferred
● Experience in a school or educational setting, particularly in an urban or charter school environment;
● Familiarity with positive behavior support strategies and student supervision best practices;
● AOM (Administration of Medication) certification or willingness to obtain certification (training will be coordinated by the school);
● Bilingual (English/Spanish or other languages) a plus.

Physical Abilities
Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone; seeing to read, prepare, and proofread documents; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other office equipment; kneeling, bending at the waist and reaching overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally to retrieve and store books, materials, files, and supplies; pushing and/or pulling objects, lifting light to medium-weight objects.
Compensation
The rate of pay for this position is $30.00 per hour for all assigned duties during scheduled work hours, including classroom coverage. No additional pay will be offered for classroom coverage.
You are required to use Perry Street Prep’s timekeeping system to record all hours worked. Pay dates are on the 15th and last day of each month.
Benefits: As a part-time employee of Perry Street Prep, you will not be eligible for School-sponsored benefits or paid time off except as required by law. You will accrue paid sick leave under the DC Accrued Sick and Safe Leave Act (1 hour per 43 hours worked, up to 5 days/year). Additionally, you may be eligible for DC Paid Family Leave, subject to program requirements.
