Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced Manual Machinist to join a precision manufacturing team. This role is responsible for setting up and operating conventional manual machine tools including lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and grinders to manufacture high-precision metal components. The ideal candidate will have extensive hands-on machining experience, strong blueprint reading capability, and the ability to maintain strict quality and safety standards in a manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate manual machining equipment including lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and grinders to produce precision metal parts.
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, technical drawings, and work instructions to determine machining specifications.
- Select appropriate tooling, cutting speeds, feeds, and machining methods based on material type and project requirements.
- Measure, inspect, and verify finished parts using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, and comparators.
- Maintain tight tolerances and ensure all machined components meet quality standards and engineering specifications.
- Troubleshoot machining issues, adjust machine settings, and resolve dimensional or tooling problems.
- Perform deburring, cleaning, and finishing of completed machined parts.
- Conduct routine preventive maintenance and basic upkeep of manual machining equipment.
- Maintain accurate production, inspection, and quality documentation.
- Follow all workplace safety procedures, PPE requirements, and housekeeping standards.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Produce 95%+ first-pass quality acceptance rate with minimal rework.
- Maintain consistent adherence to dimensional tolerances and blueprint specifications.
- Complete assigned machining jobs within established production timelines.
- Minimize machine downtime through proper maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Maintain full compliance with workplace safety and quality documentation requirements.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; technical/trade school certification preferred.
- 10+ years of hands-on experience operating manual machining equipment.
- Strong knowledge of conventional machining practices, tooling, materials, and fabrication methods.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics.
- Proficiency with precision measuring tools including calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, and gauges.
- Solid mathematical skills including geometry, fractions, decimals, and trigonometry.
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and mechanical aptitude.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in aerospace, defense, precision manufacturing, or industrial machining environments.
- Familiarity with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing).
- Ability to independently operate multiple types of manual machining equipment.
- Experience working with tight-tolerance precision metal components.
