Test, Adjust & Balance (TAB) technicians are the precision specialists of commercial HVAC. Armed with specialized instruments, you'll measure, diagnose, and fine-tune the systems that keep buildings comfortable, efficient, and safe. It's part detective work, part instrument work — and every building is a new puzzle.
Here's the part most people miss: there aren't nearly enough of us. Demand for TAB techs across New England far outstrips supply, which means real job security, real raises, and a clear climb toward NEBB certification — the gold-standard credential held by the best-paid technicians in this field.
No experience required. If you're mechanically inclined, good with numbers, and hungry to build a career instead of collecting a paycheck, we'll train you — paid, on the job and online, from day one. Wrenching on cars, military service, construction, or garage tinkering all count as a head start.

This is the full job — no surprises on day one:

Test mechanical systems utilizing specialized testing equipment

Show up sharp and on time
-
Communicate effectively with other trades on site: controls, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and more

Maintain professional job-site etiquette and follow OSHA safety guidelines

Review job specifications, scope of work, submittals, blueprints, and safety requirements

Meet project-specific deadlines

Travel out of town occasionally when projects require it

Take proper care of company-provided tools, vehicles, and test instruments

Own your training — complete all requirements on the path to becoming a NEBB Certified Technician

Report test data with complete accuracy — your numbers are the product

18 years or older with a high school diploma or GED
-
Excellent driving record — you'll be trusted with a company vehicle

Able to pass a background check and drug screen

A strong desire to learn a new career and grow in the HVAC industry

Ability to travel; sometimes evenings and out-of-town work are mandatory

Good mechanical and mathematical aptitude

Self-motivated with a desire to grow — strong work ethic, high self-accountability, and integrity

Excellent time management, critical thinking, and organization skills

Works well under pressure in a fast-paced environment

Command of the English language, both written and verbal

OSHA 10 – Construction Safety & Health online certificate before starting employment

This is a real field job — active, hands-on, and on the move. You should be able to:

Lift approximately 20 lbs regularly, with a maximum unassisted lift of 50 lbs

Work from heights on step ladders, extension ladders, and ship ladders of various heights up to 40 feet

Walk comfortably on or near active construction sites — the typical technician logs about 6,000 steps a day (your smartwatch will love this job)

Use both hands and feet fully, with full vision and hearing

Wear PPE throughout the workday: hard hat, safety vest, eye protection, steel-toed work boots, and company uniform

Safely drive a commercial vehicle
