Job Summary/Objective:
The Repair Technician is responsible for overseeing daily operations of the service and repair department for power equipment, including commercial lawn mowers, handheld outdoor power tools, and snow removal equipment. This role combines hands-on technical expertise with leadership, workflow coordination, and customer service to ensure high-quality repairs, efficient turnaround times, and a safe, organized shop environment.
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Repair Duties
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain commercial and residential power equipment, including:
- Commercial lawn mowers
- Chainsaws, leaf blowers, hedge trimmers
- 2-cycle and 4-cycle engines
- Snowplows and snow removal equipment
- Perform new equipment setup, assembly, and pre-delivery inspections (PDI)
- Install, service, and repair snowplows and related mounting systems
- Troubleshoot electrical, hydraulic, fuel, and mechanical systems
- Ensure repairs meet manufacturer specifications and safety standards
Customer & Service Coordination
- Communicate with service advisors or customers regarding repair status, estimates, and timelines
- Assist with diagnosing customer concerns and recommending solutions
- Ensure accurate documentation of repairs, parts usage, and labor
- Support warranty repairs and manufacturer service requirements
Inventory & Process Management
- Assist with parts ordering, inventory control, and tool maintenance
- Identify process improvements to increase efficiency and reduce downtime
- Coordinate seasonal workload shifts (mowing season vs. snow season)
- Ensure warranty claims are filed with vendors in a timely manner
Qualifications
Required
- 3–5+ years of experience repairing outdoor power equipment or small engines
- Strong knowledge of 2-cycle and 4-cycle engine repair
- Experience with commercial lawn equipment and handheld power tools
- Proven ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues
- Leadership or supervisory experience in a repair shop environment
- Strong organizational and communication skills
Preferred
- Experience with snowplow installation and repair
- OEM certifications (e.g., Briggs & Stratton, Kohler, Stihl, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, etc.)
- Familiarity with shop management or service software
- Valid driver’s license
Physical Requirements
- The employee must regularly lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move objects up to 50-100 Stand, bend, kneel, and work with tools for extended periods
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
- The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance. and occasionally lift and/or move objects that weigh more than 100 pounds with assistance.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
Work Environment
- Indoor repair shop with exposure to noise, grease, fuel, and outdoor conditions
- Seasonal overtime may be required during peak mowing and snow seasons
- The role involves regular use of heavy equipment, forklifts, and mechanical tools, as well as standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and copiers.
- The Repair Technician must be comfortable with physical activity, prolonged standing, and occasional lifting or movement of heavy items.
Education and Certifications
- High School Diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Operations, Supply Chain, or a related field preferred.
- Forklift Operator Certification required or ability to obtain.
- OSHA or safety certifications preferred.
Work Hours
Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Occasional weekend hours may be required during peak seasons.
