The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Transportation Engineer 4 to lead the Olympic Region Plans Office design support and plans review team, helping ensure construction projects are positioned for successful delivery. This role provides critical oversight and coordination during the design, advertisement, and pre-award stages while promoting consistent, high-quality project development. Through strong leadership and adherence to WSDOT policies and standards, this position helps advance safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation solutions for Washington communities. The work directly supports WSDOT’s commitment to quality, safety, stewardship, and long-term transportation system resilience while fostering a respectful and inclusive workplace.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Design Support Supervisor will:

Lead and support the Design Support and Plans Review Team in the development and review of region construction projects.

Monitor Design-Bid-Build projects through the pre-advertisement, advertisement, and award phases.
-
Coordinate PS&E status reporting and facilitate project status meetings with teams and support groups.
-
Monitor procurement activities for Olympic Region Design-Build contracts.
-
Coordinate Design Documentation Packages and Plans for Approval (PFA) reviews and ensure required documentation is properly archived.
-
Support development of Specifications, Engineer’s Estimates, and Special Provisions.

Provide technical guidance and training on PS&E preparation and Ad-Ready package development.

Maintain Region resources, including GSPs, the Special Provision Library, Ad-Ready Manual, and Review Roster.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:

Project Development Knowledge: Demonstrated technical expertise and professional knowledge of design documentation and the development of contract plans, specifications, and estimates.

Engineering Knowledge: Experience independently applying standard transportation engineering procedures and techniques to accomplish a wide variety of work in the office.

Technical Communication: Skills to effectively communicate technical information, both verbally and in writing, to a diverse audience including those with non-technical backgrounds.

Software Proficiency: Proficient in operating engineering and drafting software, such as MicroStation, InRoads, or OpenRoads. Proficient in operating Windows-based computer software, such as Microsoft Office Suite and virtual meeting software, such as Microsoft Teams.

Leadership & Supervision: Skills to lead and supervise a diverse workforce by fostering collaboration across boundaries, building and maintaining effective teams, coaching and mentoring staff, performing ongoing performance evaluations and encouraging engagement and professional growth.
