Position Summary
The Diesel Truck Technician is primarily responsible for performing preventative maintenance on medium- and heavy-duty diesel trucks and fleet vehicles. This position is responsible for maintaining fleet reliability through routine inspections, servicing, diagnostics, and minor repairs.
In addition to preventative maintenance, the technician will diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair hydraulic and electric liftgate systems installed on commercial vehicles. Successful candidates will possess strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a commitment to quality workmanship and safety.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on medium- and heavy-duty diesel trucks and fleet vehicles.
- Complete oil changes, filter replacements, lubrication services, fluid exchanges, and chassis inspections.
- Perform comprehensive vehicle inspections to identify worn or damaged components before failures occur.
- Inspect and service brake systems, steering, suspension, driveline components, cooling systems, batteries, belts, hoses, tires, and other critical systems.
- Perform DOT inspections and ensure vehicles meet applicable federal and state safety regulations.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues identified during inspections or reported by customers.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on hydraulic and electric liftgate systems, including:
- Hydraulic pumps and cylinders
- Electric motors
- Hydraulic hoses and fittings
- Wiring and electrical controls
- Switches, solenoids, and control modules
- Liftgate safety devices and operating systems
- Test liftgate operation following repairs to ensure safe and reliable performance.
- Perform minor mechanical repairs discovered during preventative maintenance services.
- Recommend additional repairs when safety or reliability concerns are identified.
- Utilize diagnostic equipment, service manuals, wiring diagrams, and hydraulic schematics to accurately diagnose issues.
- Accurately document inspections, repairs, labor performed, and parts used.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Follow OSHA regulations and all company safety policies.
- Communicate professionally with supervisors and customers regarding vehicle condition and repair recommendations.
- Assist with other shop and fleet maintenance responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of experience performing preventative maintenance and repairs on medium- or heavy-duty diesel trucks or commercial vehicles preferred.
- Experience diagnosing and repairing commercial vehicle liftgate systems is preferred.
- Working knowledge of diesel engines, air brake systems, suspension, steering, electrical systems, and hydraulic systems.
- Ability to read wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, and service manuals.
- Experience using diagnostic scan tools and electrical testing equipment.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a team environment.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Valid driver's license required.
- CDL is preferred but not required.
- Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and perform physical work including standing, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in indoor and outdoor environments.
Tools Required
Technicians are expected to provide and maintain their own professional-grade hand tools necessary to perform routine preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and general mechanical repairs. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Standard metric and SAE hand tools
- Socket and wrench sets
- Screwdrivers, pliers, and specialty hand tools
- Torque wrenches
- Electrical testing equipment such as a digital multimeter and test light
- Pry bars, hammers, punches, and other common service tools
- Tool storage box or roll cart
North Florida Public Safety provides specialty tools, heavy shop equipment, vehicle lifts, diagnostic software, and manufacturer-specific service equipment required to perform specialized repairs.
Applicants should possess a sufficient personal tool inventory to perform their job efficiently and safely.
Preferred Qualifications
- ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Certifications
- Experience servicing Freightliner, International, Kenworth, Peterbilt, Ford, Chevrolet, Ram, or Isuzu commercial trucks
- Experience servicing Waltco, Maxon, Tommy Gate, Anthony, Dhollandia, or Thieman liftgate systems
- Welding and light fabrication experience
- Experience with fleet maintenance software
