Job Overview
CCXpress is seeking an experienced, dependable Heavy Diesel & Fleet Trailer Mechanic to join our Fontana maintenance team. This is a combined position for a mechanic who can work on both Class 8 diesel tractors and commercial dry van/refrigerated trailers.
We are looking for a hands-on mechanic who understands that safety, preventative maintenance, equipment reliability, and minimizing downtime are critical to a successful trucking operation.
The ideal candidate will have experience diagnosing and repairing Class 8 trucks while also being capable of handling trailer inspections, brakes, suspension, electrical, doors, structural repairs, and preventative maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
Heavy Diesel / Tractor Maintenance
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain Class 8 diesel tractors
- Perform preventative maintenance and scheduled services
- Diagnose engine, electrical, cooling, air, and aftertreatment systems
- Perform repairs involving:
- Diesel engines
- Air brake systems
- Suspension and steering
- Electrical and charging systems
- Cooling systems
- Air systems
- DEF/DPF and emissions-related systems
- Troubleshoot check-engine lights and fault codes using diagnostic equipment
- Identify developing mechanical problems before they result in roadside failures
- Perform DOT/CHP-related inspections and correct identified deficiencies
- Conduct road-service repairs when necessary
- Coordinate outside vendor repairs when work cannot efficiently be completed in-house
Fleet Trailer Maintenance
- Inspect, maintain, and repair 53-foot dry van and refrigerated trailers
- Perform preventative maintenance and DOT inspections
- Inspect and repair:
- Trailer brake systems
- Air lines and air systems
- ABS and electrical systems
- Suspension components
- Wheel ends, bearings, hubs, and seals
- Tires and mud flaps
- Landing gear
- Trailer doors, hinges, latches, and hardware
- Interior walls, floors, roofs, and exterior panels
- Lights, wiring, and electrical connections
- Identify structural or safety-related trailer damage
- Perform minor welding and fabrication when qualified
- Ensure trailers meet company food-grade cleanliness and equipment standards
- Inspect inbound/outbound equipment and document existing damage or deficiencies
Fleet Maintenance & Safety Responsibilities
- Complete work orders accurately and document all repairs performed
- Maintain accurate preventative maintenance and inspection records
- Review driver DVIRs and address reported defects promptly
- Prioritize repairs based on safety, operational requirements, and equipment availability
- Maintain parts and shop inventory and communicate needed purchases
- Help control maintenance costs by identifying repeat repairs and unnecessary outside vendor expenses
- Keep the maintenance shop, tools, and work areas organized and safe
- Communicate equipment status with Fleet Management, Operations, Safety, and drivers
- Ensure equipment is not released into service when a known safety defect exists
- Assist management in developing a reliable preventative maintenance program that reduces breakdowns and equipment downtime
Qualifications
- 4+ years of hands-on heavy-duty truck and/or trailer repair experience preferred
- Strong experience with Class 8 diesel tractors
- Commercial trailer repair experience strongly preferred
- Knowledge of DOT/FMCSA and California commercial vehicle safety requirements
- Strong understanding of air brake systems
- Experience with diesel diagnostic software and electronic troubleshooting
- Cummins engine experience is highly desirable
- Ability to diagnose problems instead of simply replacing parts
- Welding/fabrication experience is a plus
- Must provide or have access to appropriate mechanic hand tools
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
- Class A CDL preferred
- DOT/CHP inspector certification is highly desirable
- Ability to safely lift, move, and work with heavy components
- Must be dependable and able to work independently with limited supervision

Schedule
- Full-time position
- Monday through Friday with flexibility based on fleet requirements
- Some overtime, weekend, or emergency repair availability may be required
- Schedule may vary depending on equipment and operational needs
Compensation
Competitive hourly compensation based on position, experience, certifications, and ability to perform both heavy diesel and trailer repairs.
Candidates with extensive Class 8 diesel diagnostics, Cummins experience, CDL Class A, DOT/CHP inspection certification, welding skills, and commercial trailer experience may qualify for higher starting compensation.
