Job Summary:
The Heavy Equipment Technician is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and servicing of heavy machinery and equipment used in the company’s waste management operations. This role ensures that all equipment operates at optimal performance, minimizing downtime and ensuring safety compliance. The technician will perform preventive maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and complete repairs on a variety of heavy equipment, including loaders, excavators, bulldozers, and other machinery used for the transportation and processing of waste.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Perform regular preventive maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment, including but not limited to PM Inspections, tire rotations, brake inspections and repairs, and hydraulic system inspections and repairs.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues on heavy equipment and make necessary repairs.
- Repair or replace defective parts, components, and systems, including engines, transmissions, and other vital machinery.
- Inspect and test equipment to ensure all repairs meet operational and safety standards.
- Maintain detailed records of all maintenance activities, repairs, and part replacements.
- Respond to emergency repair calls and perform repairs in a timely manner to minimize equipment downtime.
- Ensure that equipment is properly cleaned, lubricated, and maintained to extend its service life.
- Collaborate with operators and supervisors to determine equipment performance issues and assist in troubleshooting problems.
- Follow safety procedures and regulations while performing repairs and maintenance work.
- Order parts and supplies as needed, ensuring inventory is maintained for routine repairs and parts replacements.
- Ensure compliance with all company policies and regulations, including safety and environmental standards.
- Participate in training programs to stay updated on new equipment and technologies.
- Provide guidance on proper equipment handling and maintenance to operators and other staff members.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of heavy equipment systems, including mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
- Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing equipment malfunctions and mechanical failures.
- Ability to use diagnostic tools and equipment to assess problems and solutions.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks efficiently.
- Good communication skills to collaborate with team members and report repair status.
- Problem-solving abilities to troubleshoot complex issues with equipment.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Physical stamina and ability to lift heavy components or equipment parts when required.
- Ability to operate various machinery and perform equipment tests as needed.
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Certification in Heavy Equipment Maintenance or Diesel Mechanics is preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in maintaining and repairing heavy equipment, preferably in the waste management or transportation industry.
- Experience with a variety of equipment including loaders, excavators, and bulldozers is highly preferred.
- Familiarity with safety regulations and environmental standards related to heavy equipment and machinery.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and crouch for extended periods.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and assist in moving heavier parts or components.
- Ability to work in challenging environments, including exposure to dust, noise, and outdoor weather conditions.
- Must be capable of working in confined spaces and performing repairs at height, such as on large trucks or machinery.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, goggles, hearing protection, and steel-toed boots is required.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting and carrying equipment parts.
Pay: $20.00 - $33.82 per hour
